Plight of the Oregon Platypus
Plight of the Oregon Platypus
By Hugh Duvall Last night the University of Oregon Ducks played the Oregon State University Beavers in a “Civil War” basketball game. All of these civil war games are deeply meaningful to Oregonians. This is because fans associated with each school feel strongly, to their very core, to the center of the marrow of their thigh bones, about one thing: Their school’s players from California are…

Ready for first home game?
The newest Beaver (that’s the OSU mascot FYI)
I spent 22 years in the U.S. Army where the chance to attend a variety of colleges was readily available. I failed to capitalize on this opportunity and have regretted it daily since my retirement. I applied to Oregon State University but was denied and rightfully so. I have spent the last year earning college credits through American Public University System/American Military University. I applied for admission to OSU for the Winter 2016 term and have been accepted.
I know it seems childish to be proud of a relatively minor achievement and one that 1000′s of high school seniors accomplish every year but ... here I am, proud as can be. Now the real work begins.
I am an Oregon State University student. My home state has been rocked by the tragedy of the Umpqua Community College mass shooting.
After school shootings, there is a possibility of an “inspired” follow up in other places. I am worried about schools across the country, but I’m mostly worried about my campus. I’m scared for my safety, my friends’ safety, and the safety of Beaver Nation.
Be safe everybody. We can get through this...
Feeling Small
I knew what I was getting into when selecting a school like Oregon State University. It's a big school - but it's not the biggest school - filled with around 28,000 students and that number continues to grow. I definitely don't run into people I know as often as I did in high school (yet for some reason I find myself constantly running into the same people I don't know).
Anyway, I digress.
What I wanted to talk about was the fact that being a singular, small female on a big campus surrounded by people bigger than you on many levels, definitely doesn't help with building self-esteem. I've had some bad luck with the first few organizations I tried to be a part of, can't really find any jobs on campus, and clubs that I want to join have already been in session for 7 weeks and I feel embarrassed showing up so late.
The feeling is so weird. In high school, I was a social butterfly. I was never afraid to interact with others. I got involved and it was easy to, the opportunities to do something for my school or the community were endless. But I'm finding this completely different in college. I've come to the realization that the opportunities are out here, but it's up to me to go find them. And if it's too late, well, then it's too late.
And sometimes, people can just be plain intimidating. I admit that I've given up/let opportunities pass because people seemed so intimidating to me I'd rather just not try instead of being embarrassed when I found out I didn't get the position. It's not a very good mindset to be in, but I'm hoping to break out of it soon.
It really is survival of the fittest out here in Beaver Nation.
Pretty much! :D
Tebeau Hall is almost complete!
