a boy and his emotional support cabbit
postgame bede & hop relationship is so fascinating for me to think ab. i don't think they'd hate each other per se, but they wouldn't *like* each other either (or it atleast would take them a long, long time to get to that point) a) bede has the vulnerability and emotional maturity of a brick wall (lovingly) b) i think hop is pettier/prouder than people give him credit for c) bede struck a particularly sensitive nerve. we've seen time & time again people dismissing hop's ability and he takes it like a champ (ha,) it's only when leon is brought in that he gets so distressed. & bede knows exactly Where would hurt most because it's what would hurt HIM most. subsconciously or consciously, he sees himself in hop and he doesn't like it. even if they do become tentative friends, because they hit such a sore subject for each other and because bede avoids communication/self reflection like his life depends on it, until they're willing to talk it out i think there'd be a lingering bitterness between each other. that's why i think them as proper friends would only truly work as adults
re: bede's watch
an interpretation i see often is oh, rose carelessly gave bede a random expensive watch that doesn't fit him at all, he never cared for bede from the beginning! which.. i don't really agree with. it feels a little out of character for rose, to me. he is calculating, yes, but in his own way his love for galar & it's citizens is genuine. i don't think he looked at bede and went "aha ha, a child to manipulate!", he's not ghetsis. a man who puts in effort to keep any historical architecture preserved even in his renovations would not be so callous, however it is exactly his love for galar that his his fatal flaw. he falls flat in considering the individual, & that is his biggest mistake with bede.
i think he was telling the truth when he said he saw himself in bede & he wanted to help, & that giving him pokemon was a genuine act of goodwill. the choice in pokemon, hatenna, was clearly deliberate as in training her it would align with Bede's troubles with lashing out, which is why he doesn't get along with others. we see rose wearing a similar style watch on his sprite, so my personal interpretation is that he gave his own watch to bede.
this doesn't mean that these actions are not shallow to an extent, though. yes, bede training hatterene was a deliberate choice & did make him calmer, but training her teaches him to *surpress*, not process. he is still lacking the proper guidance of an adult figure that rose isn't taking responsibility for; & this comes back to bite him via the mural incident. yes, i think the watch was a genuine gift, a way of saying "see? you're not alone; you're with me now." but because of the nature of their relationship what value it could have had has become nothing but a shallow status symbol bede uses to defend himself with.
i don't think its an issue of "rose never cared about bede to begin with," he did, but he is negligent about it, too focused on the future & of galar as a whole to consider any present day consequences.
(taps mic) hello? is this thing on? i want to request more loverboy bede content. he is so much more complimentary than you might think he is. exhibit A: galar mine no2 battle dialogue when sending out his last pokemon: "excellent! not everyone can corner my team like this!", even previously to that he comments on how the protag has grown but then has to follow that up with "only a little though!"
i'm a firm believer that if he did not have to convince himself of his own superiority (because of course, acknowledging that theres someone stronger than him would mean failure, & failure doesn't exist in his mind), in different circumstances, he and gloria/victor would have a much more amicable relationship. his instinct is to speak highly of those he considers strong (the protag) or other wise holds dear/in high regard (rose, his pokemon "my dear hatterene/my partner's move is rather splendid, don't you think?"), but because he's in competition with the protag he cannot let himself express that. he goes back on his words *because* of that specific situation, but would not otherwise. does that make sense.
to me, he's a delicate balance between "not used to reciprocal affection/praise & doesn't know how to react to it" & "intentionally & unintentionally straightforwardly praising". that boy is an acts of service + words of affirmation love languager TO ME.
more misophonia bedeisms. new pmex story event pissed me off for a plethora of reasons but my pettiest reason was that @ the end it contradicted a previous line from a different alt i really liked ab bede eating lunch alone. but then i imagined bede in his noise cancelling headphones eating w his friends & felt better about it
replaying swsh rn for future bede character analysis video essay of sorts and its kind of shocking 2 me how little people talk about the hop bede parallels considering how In Your Face Blatant it is. like, atleast to me
i'm very very fond of bede's team. teambuilding in pkmn is some of my favorite ways to show off a trainer's character so i wanted to discuss some notable favorites :-)
1. ofc, hatterene - his dear hatterene!! i can't NOT mention her. she's theeeee bedemon. the no1. the og. his starter being hatenna was absolutely a deliberate choice, as he'd need to calm his emotions for her to even approach him. its such a fascinating dynamic 2 me because its undeniable how much she helped him, but its also sad how ..detached that was by rose. bede essentially had to teach himself to "fix" (so to speak) his own problems. obviously, since he's trying to figure out how to reach out to this pkmn by himself, with no guidance, i can see how he might do so in ways that are unhealthy to him. learning to suppress rather than regulate. & thats not hatterene's fault, she's just a pokemon, & he describes how much she means to her as "we've been through a lot together." & its sooooo. they're clearly very close partners & it makes me SICK!!! i love the relationships characters have w their partner pokemon.
2. galarian ponyta/rapidash - the manga (or more specifically, sou. tangent; i love you sou thank you so so so much for defending my boy. reading pokespe felt like i was in heaven. people acknowledging that bede isn't a bad person? & that he has love in his heart? defending him? acknowledging that rose treated him poorly? cute interactions between bede nia & peony??? incredible) brings up the shield dex entry; --if it senses evil in your heart, it will promptly run away to illustrate that while bede may be harsh, he has no ill intentions & i love that. so much. also, rapidash being prideful just like him is cute. funfact! he has rapidash bangs & hatenna's side swirlies in his hair :-)
3. sylveon - multiple of it's dex entries state that sylveon's feelers elicits a soothing effect, & its often depicted in fanart as a support pokemon. i like to imagine the same applies for bede as well, as it would help with his struggles w emotional regulation. his cabbit <3
4. gardevoir - all of gardevoir's dex entries discuss the lengths it's willing to go to protect it's trainer, from risking its life to creating black holes. that's very, VERY bede. he goes all in for the people he loves. i think of how immediately post disqualification, he still attempts to win back chairman rose's favor, & how in the spe characterization he has to be *physically held back* from running into the powerplant when a rumble was felt, incase rose might've been in danger. to quote-- "let go of me! if anything happens to the chairman...!" again, post disqualification. just thinking about it pisses me off rose you DID NOT DESERVE HIM!!!!
honorable mentions, aka i lied i'm just talking about his whole team;
5. gothorita - from the gothoria line onwards, a link between it's psychic powers & stars are established. this is fitting considering bede was a psychic specialist while he was searching for wishing stars.
6. solosis line - i actually didn't think i'd have much to say for this, but i checked the line's dex entries & solosis can communicate telepathically???? i don't think this says a lot about bede's character or anything, i just think the idea of his solosis talking to him is cute. more importantly though, there's a theme of intelligence / brains between duosion & reuniclus, reuniclus in particular. we don't ever see him evolve his reuniclus, but i think that detail is cute because the league number that he chose could be read as 'clever'! also, i find it funny just how often he's associated with reuniclus despite never being seen using it. he had a gothorita too, but more art depicts him with reuniclus than gothorita.
7. mawile - i wish i had more to say about mawile, i really do, but likely she's just a strategic move on his part to counter his fairy specialist team's steel type weakness. i don't really have anything to say relating to his character or a potential relationship with her outside of battle :')... erm. mawile did dance onstage with hatsune miku while bede's theme played !!
non canon mention, but iron valiant sync pair from pmex - i looooved that event so so so so much. rose's treatment of iron valiant mirroring that of how he treated bede, & bede being able to recognize how that was wrong & standing up to rose.. if he were to do so, it makes sense to me that he'd do it for the sake of a pokemon rather than himself. i liked the way he speaks about iron valiant too. when faced with an unknown pokemon, he treats it as any other, & simply aims to understand it so he can better draw out it's power. the framing is very battle focused, as his priorities tend to be, but the sentiment is sweet to me. he emphasizes how he, as a trainer, can better understand iron valiant & therefore support it rather than brute forcing it. in my opinion, its a very in character way to show off how thoughtful he is towards his pokemon.
lets supress our emotions until they inevitably explode. with mama
