a boy and his emotional support cabbit
i wish marnie was written just Slightly differently (adjust in attitude / more story presence) & then for her to meet bede. i like her conceptually, a shy / reserved former crybaby of a girl gathering up her bravery for the sake of her neglected town. it wouldve been nice if she was more vocally opposed to rose as contrast 2 everyone who speaks so highly of him. like for most people it was very obvious that rose was intended as the "twist villain" but i think that couldve sown the seeds for people to gather Why and How exactly he is villainous. plus, a marnie bede confrontation in which bede's idol-worship idea of The Chairman couldve been directly challenged could be interesting. maybe he gets immediately defensive, tells her she's lying-- iirc he never got to spikemuth ingame to see it for himself when he got disqualified, but perhaps theres a doubt at the back of his mind....... food for thought
postgame bede & hop relationship is so fascinating for me to think ab. i don't think they'd hate each other per se, but they wouldn't *like* each other either (or it atleast would take them a long, long time to get to that point) a) bede has the vulnerability and emotional maturity of a brick wall (lovingly) b) i think hop is pettier/prouder than people give him credit for c) bede struck a particularly sensitive nerve. we've seen time & time again people dismissing hop's ability and he takes it like a champ (ha,) it's only when leon is brought in that he gets so distressed. & bede knows exactly Where would hurt most because it's what would hurt HIM most. subsconciously or consciously, he sees himself in hop and he doesn't like it. even if they do become tentative friends, because they hit such a sore subject for each other and because bede avoids communication/self reflection like his life depends on it, until they're willing to talk it out i think there'd be a lingering bitterness between each other. that's why i think them as proper friends would only truly work as adults
re: bede's watch
an interpretation i see often is oh, rose carelessly gave bede a random expensive watch that doesn't fit him at all, he never cared for bede from the beginning! which.. i don't really agree with. it feels a little out of character for rose, to me. he is calculating, yes, but in his own way his love for galar & it's citizens is genuine. i don't think he looked at bede and went "aha ha, a child to manipulate!", he's not ghetsis. a man who puts in effort to keep any historical architecture preserved even in his renovations would not be so callous, however it is exactly his love for galar that his his fatal flaw. he falls flat in considering the individual, & that is his biggest mistake with bede.
i think he was telling the truth when he said he saw himself in bede & he wanted to help, & that giving him pokemon was a genuine act of goodwill. the choice in pokemon, hatenna, was clearly deliberate as in training her it would align with Bede's troubles with lashing out, which is why he doesn't get along with others. we see rose wearing a similar style watch on his sprite, so my personal interpretation is that he gave his own watch to bede.
this doesn't mean that these actions are not shallow to an extent, though. yes, bede training hatterene was a deliberate choice & did make him calmer, but training her teaches him to *surpress*, not process. he is still lacking the proper guidance of an adult figure that rose isn't taking responsibility for; & this comes back to bite him via the mural incident. yes, i think the watch was a genuine gift, a way of saying "see? you're not alone; you're with me now." but because of the nature of their relationship what value it could have had has become nothing but a shallow status symbol bede uses to defend himself with.
i don't think its an issue of "rose never cared about bede to begin with," he did, but he is negligent about it, too focused on the future & of galar as a whole to consider any present day consequences.
(taps mic) hello? is this thing on? i want to request more loverboy bede content. he is so much more complimentary than you might think he is. exhibit A: galar mine no2 battle dialogue when sending out his last pokemon: "excellent! not everyone can corner my team like this!", even previously to that he comments on how the protag has grown but then has to follow that up with "only a little though!"
i'm a firm believer that if he did not have to convince himself of his own superiority (because of course, acknowledging that theres someone stronger than him would mean failure, & failure doesn't exist in his mind), in different circumstances, he and gloria/victor would have a much more amicable relationship. his instinct is to speak highly of those he considers strong (the protag) or other wise holds dear/in high regard (rose, his pokemon "my dear hatterene/my partner's move is rather splendid, don't you think?"), but because he's in competition with the protag he cannot let himself express that. he goes back on his words *because* of that specific situation, but would not otherwise. does that make sense.
to me, he's a delicate balance between "not used to reciprocal affection/praise & doesn't know how to react to it" & "intentionally & unintentionally straightforwardly praising". that boy is an acts of service + words of affirmation love languager TO ME.
more misophonia bedeisms. new pmex story event pissed me off for a plethora of reasons but my pettiest reason was that @ the end it contradicted a previous line from a different alt i really liked ab bede eating lunch alone. but then i imagined bede in his noise cancelling headphones eating w his friends & felt better about it
replaying swsh rn for future bede character analysis video essay of sorts and its kind of shocking 2 me how little people talk about the hop bede parallels considering how In Your Face Blatant it is. like, atleast to me
you know i do think a lot about how hop & marnie both get final battle remixes of their themes in which they're being cheered for (in fairness, marnie's theme had that already it's just amped up in intensity), & bede . Presumably! cheers his own fucking name. they HATE me
