Bed Stuy 5K: Last year when I did this race, I was pregnant and vomited at every mile pacing 17:05/mi. Although there's no shame with that, I knew it was a long way away from my average 5K. I promised myself that I wouldn't go down this rabbit hole of depression for not clutching two newborns; loss sticks to you like gum. I woke up this morning looking forward to making this day one of celebrating what I wanted for them by claiming my joy with my running community. I love the #bedstuy5k because frankly, it's in my own neighbourhood. There's a pride that glosses over people when we know that we're celebrating each other. Out there, I'm not the girl "defying stereotypes." I'm Tay, Toys when autocorrect be trippin and to the ones who see me running at 4am, I'm just that crazy dread chic with the bright skirts, multicolored socks and a heavy rotation of sneakers. I'm part of a tribe y'all and nah, all of em don't know me but they love me by association. We got each others' backs for hours from the pavement, to moments where our footsteps sound like African drums over 90s rap lyrics and finishing your race to the roars of your neighbors, friends, family and the neighborhood drunk who has a heart of gold. I love my community (and the dope ass medal for this race.) Thanks to Javelina Jundred 100K training, I polished off another 3.1 and ended at my corner store. My Arabic bodega papi knows what I want: Baconeggandcheese -- that's one word. He looks at me, clothing drenched, hair rained out and says, "training again my friend?" And I nodded saying, "of course." He made the other two sandwiches for me without asking; he instinctively knows that I purchase for 3 and remembers to put the ketchup on my husband's sandwich. I forgot my debit card at home to cover the bill. My counter guy looks at me and gestures me to take it. "Bring back next time. You need to eat if you train like Rocky my friend." He knows me; they know me. That's my true medal. My family are the wings that I needed today.
