California bee plant (Scrophularia californica), a member of the figwort family. They grow very tall with small red flowers widely spaced out across the height.

True to its name, the bee plant is a strong draw for bees, even though the blooms are red — a color bees can’t see. One theory is that bees instead sense the UV light that the flowers emit.

The early summer flowering of Centaurea dealbata 'Steenbergii' (mealy centaury) provides these deep pink blooms followed by ornamental seedheads. This herbaceous perennial forms a clump of lobed leaves with grey hairs beneath. A sunny location with a fairly dry, poor soil can be useful as this plant can be invasive if the soil is fertile and moist.

Comfrey in the garden on Forsythia Hill. Make sure you give it lots of room! Very aggressive and long tap root. Where you put it, it’s there to stay!

The bees love it.
