Something rattling in my brain about Comfrey and how comfrey (the plant) is a topical medicinal plant for wounds and aches but taking it orally can lead to liver failure. Something about being helpful and a hero on the surface and toxic on the inside. Something about not realizing you're poisoning the people closest to you. Is that anything?

Ok, but what if after book four Cadswitch Gotch stops being a part of the adventures and that's why "the quality falls off" for Maxwell. Maybe the first few books were done like adventure reports to Cadswitch, Comfrey recounting the adventure Sherlock Holmes style and then shifted into more straight narratives as the series grew in popularity and acclaim?
