the garden's done in: the season's first snowstorm over the weekend, an indifferent effort to cover up. these were just before, and i threw a bedsheet over them, after tipping a big empty pot over my favorite one. shockingly, the things that didn't die in the frost were the ones i expected to lose: the calendula flowers, the borage, most of the fernleaf dill, the peas i almost pulled up as a lost cause. even the baby's-breath. i'm going to clean up sparingly & slowly, just in case the lost cosmos and sunflowers are protecting the living flowers, like windbreaks (although also because i have a custom order to finish as soon as possible, and then so much half-done for the awkward shop).
