PART 1 | POLL 5
SHRIMP TOURNAMENT!!!
WHO IS COOLER?!
Bee shrimp
Vampire shrimp
(make sure to read info on both contenders before voting! some information may be hidden under "read more"!!)
BEE SHRIMP (Caridina cantonensis)
AKA: nicknames vary based on morph
just like cherry shrimp, these guys are highly diverse and well loved in the aquarium keeping community, as they boast all kinds of beautiful patterns and colors! these highly social creatures feel safer in large colonies, so they love to have tons of friends! for an interesting fact, bee shrimp are mainly nocturnal due to 1: their wild instinct of wanting to avoid predators while they graze, and 2: algae being generally most nutritious and bountiful around dusk, since they grow throughout the daytime. however, bee shrimp in captivity seem to drop this schedule and will just graze whenever they wish.

VAMPIRE SHRIMP (Atya gabonensis)
AKA: african fan shrimp, african filter shrimp, african giant shrimp, blue rhino shrimp, gabon shrimp, cameroon fan shrimp
despite what you may think from their name, these shrimp aren't known for being aggressive at all, and are quite the gentle giants! they get along with many dwarf shrimp quite well, and housing both species in one aquarium can lead to some cute photos of their drastic size difference, like the one shown above! they come in all sorts of colors, mainly cream, dark brown, and deep blue, and more rarely pink, purple, and green- and are even known for changing color under certain water conditions- some change several times in just one year!

Shrimp are just interesting little guys. They are incredibly diverse, they can be delicious, they are an integral part of their ecosystems, they can live in marine or freshwater depending on species, and best of all, they make great pets, too. Of all the fascinating things I've kept in my fish tanks over the years (and mind you, I've only kept freshwater because I'm not made out of money), owning the Crystal Red Shrimp and its other varieties has been such a treat, I'm planning on getting more soon.
The Crystal Red Shrimp appeared in AC Pocket Camp in May of 2020 for Fishing Tourney 26.
I'll be here all day if I go over Crustaceans and all of the species we have covered since the dawn of the Fish Explained posts. You're better off looking through the masterpost and skimming for them. In a nutshell, we've covered all of the well-known crustaceans, including numerous shrimps, lobsters, crabs, things that just look like crabs, and some funky relatives. They are all Arthropods, the most diverse and species-rich Phylum in the animal kingdom. It includes all animals with an exoskeleton or cuticle, separate body segments, and jointed legs. Within the Crustacean Subphylum is the InfraOrder Caridea, the true shrimp. Shrimp not in this InfraOrder are not true shrimp and simply just have the same look. Just like with crabs, lots of different crustaceans evolved this same body plan. It's quick and nimble, so why not? Within Caridea is Caridina, a large genus from which the Crystal Red Shrimp, or, the Bee Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) belongs. It is native to freshwater streams in Southeast Asia.

As you can guess, the breed of Bee Shrimp AC chose to showcase isn't what they look like in the wild. The breed they chose is the one commonly called the "Crystal Red Shrimp" in the pet trade, also known as the Red Bee. This is a color mutation bred from the species. Because of their beautiful colors and patterns, Bee Shrimp are one of the most popular freshwater shrimp kept in aquaria. From this popularity comes breeding for new colors breeders and pet stores can sell under new names. Of course, during my research, it was made clear the pet trade for these guys has their breeding down to a science. I mean...look at this:
I said "down to a science" right? The wild varieties are there at the top.
No matter what color you get, they're just perfect for a community tank where everyone gets along, being so peaceful. They also swim around a lot, so, along with their colors, they are really visible residents of your aquarium. Bee shrimp don't get very big either and are great on algae and biofilm control.
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?
Bee shrimp are a common aquarium pet. Thanks to selective breeding, they come in a wide variety of colors!
