Beechnuts
The tiny hidden nuts
among the thick layer of leaves
tasty wee nuggets
gifts from the smooth barked grey tree,
one the kings of the forest.

#FAGUS SYLVATICA - COMMON BEECH - BEECHNUTS
@samirafee
This is the time where I roam around the garden to collect black walnuts (on windy days I go out with a hard hat 😬😂), acorns, chestnuts and beechnuts as special treats for the birds. The big green balls are the black walnuts. I smash the skin, hull and wash them, and then set them out to dry and cure. They stain like crazy, so wear gloves if you do that. The acorns I smash before I use them. They have nice, thick flesh inside that the larger birds love.

Bucheckern-Strang Tag 2-3 * Beechnuts String Day 2-3 (Fagus sylvatica) halb geöffnet * half opened
Everything has it's own time. Picking has its time.
As long as the beechnuts are closed, they have a soft stem, which can be pierced with a needle. If you pick them too early, the capsules remain closed. But I would like them to open on the fabric after sewing. It is only a short period of a few days: the capsules become more and more plump and harder, and suddenly the stem begins to get hard. This is the right time to pick: just before the capsule breaks and the stem is still soft enough to sew.
