I'm thinking at this point, even though the studio greenlit BJ3, it's unlikely it will happen. Tim Burton appears to be more concerned with other projects right now, and after Catherine O'Hara's passing, I just don't know, tbh. Of course, her character had passed away in the last movie, as well, but for some reason I don't see Tim going back to the project without her. I always thought her character would be involved in some way in the third film, though she'd be a ghost now. He might still get back to Beetlejuice, though, but I'm just saying, he might not be as motivated as he was when he brought us BJ2. If nothing's announced by this fall, I'll say it's not happening at all.
Tbh, I think that's the best scenario after all. I think BJ2 ended in a way that we can really headcanon whatever we'd like for it to happen afterwards. Betelgeuse is clearly still around, he's still as attached to Lydia as ever, and he's not going anywhere. And Lydia can stand her ground with him and I think even if he still spooks her, she doesn't fear him anymore. And there can be banter and whatever the heck we'd like for there to be. A third movie, as much as I'd love to see more of Betel, Lydia, and Astrid, might not go as we'd like and then if it really is a definitive end and it's awful, there'll be less room to headcanon fun scenarios. I mean, there can always be room for that (coming up with scenarios and headcanons is what fandom does best), but there will be a sour taste that right now doesn't exist.
