imagine writing a main character to be queer and in love with his best friend as a major aspect of his arc and then calling the audience interpreting that a romance might come out of that setup "noise"

what is mike's narrative if not a horrible queer tragedy. the ending directly mirrors s1 with a sudden desperate mike/el kiss followed by el dying and mike mourning and holding onto hope that she's still out there somewhere, but. this time he finally gives up. he knows that even if she were still out there, whatever they had is over. el is the only girl he ever had the hope of loving. and that's twice now they've kissed only for that metaphorical hope to immediately die. and then mike wheeler puts away his childhood, which explicitly represents queer happiness and freedom, and closes the door behind him.

will's great fear that drove him to come out was that he would push away his loved ones and they would all drift apart until he was alone. and then his supposed "hopeful" ending is him ending up far away, alone, talking to a stranger in a bar. like. the fuck
