Pran - When Beimaan made a Pakeezah statement

Pran filmography has a mix of Beimaan (villainous) and Pakeezah (pure hearted ) roles.SJ has contributed in equal measure to these facets. He had the reputation of being a gentleman despite the terror some of his roles wreaked. However he did himself no favour by making unwanted comments and show of principles on what was not his metier at the behest of vested interests. Pran's stand conveyed he just did not want SJ to win the award. He was not bothered who won as he first pitched for some other MD and later in a perceived politically correct sympathetic move switched to Late Ghulam Mohammed and playing on the emotional quotient carried out his villainous act of boycott. He forgot that SJ themselves were victims as several award deserving efforts were bypassed for less illustrious ones of others. Also he did not introspect if he really deserved the awards he got or there were more worthy claimants.

All said and done Pakeezah did benefit a lot from death of Meena Kumari and Ghulam Mohd. Similar movies which did not get this emotional push despite being good in content and music did not do as well. Take example of Razia Sultan.Highbrow content or music do not bring money, only popular ones or those that become popular by word of mouth or sometimes demise of an artist does.. In an interview after failure of Razia Sultan Kamal was brutally honest. He made a statement that in place of the high flow but incomprehensible dialogue used if he had used a line as "Chalo ek cutting aur lemon soda lete hain" in a scene depicting characters proceeding for refreshments, the film could have seen more audience but he would not be faithful to the subject. Incidentally even for Pakeezah there was pressure from distributors to replace the music with a popular name. SJ was among the names proposed. However Kamal was out of funds and also did not want soil the memory of a composer who was no more, hence he continued with what was recorded with Naushad filling in. In an interview in Filmfare he has stated that had Ghulam Mohammed been alive he would have changed the music. He knew the value of popular music which the masses hum and flock to theaters for. He had personal experience with Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi scoring over Mughal -e- Azam in popularity. Pran is no authority on music. He was just acting as stooge of vested interests. Incidentally Pran never worked with RK after Bobby. Rishi Kapoor even rebuffed him when Pran expressed his lifetime ambition to essay the role of Chanakya in a movie he hoped RK Studios would produce. Rishi's reply was that Pran could look for other producers as he had no intention of making any such movie with Pran. Pran's association with Shankarji however continued for several years and several memorable songs including the gem filmed on him in Sanyasi. The movie with 8 songs depicting all emotions backed by a raga based background music lost to Julie which just had a bhajan and three other one dimensional songs on emotion of love. Pran the pompous music expert was strangely silent on this. This is exactly the point I wanted to make, the Pran effect or the disservice done to SJ by Pran. Nobody talks of merits or otherwise of Dosti, Gharana, Julie nor the eternal scores in Basant Bahar, Amrapali, Kathputhli, Aashiq and several timeless classics worthy of an award at any time or age. Thanks to Pran people have become music experts and Pakeezah has become a reference standard like the ultimate in film music. Several better scores that did not benefit from Pran effect or death of lead heroine have gone unsung. Do not wish to belittle Ghulam Mohammed but his score in Mirza Ghalib was far superior though despite a National Award few remember it today unlike Pakeezah thanks to Pran effect. Also Pran should have done some spadework before like a puppet executing his master's command and targetting SJ first pitching in for some other composer and later firing off a deceased composer's shoulder. Several thumris of Pakeezah have their antecedents in folklore and elsewhere. Naushad under whom Ghulam Mohammed was an assistant claimed that his contribution to the music was substantial but not credited. The signature song Inhi Logon Ne defining the lead role in the movie of the nautch girl has been used in tune and lyrics atleast five times before by illustrious names as Saraswati Devi, Pt Govindram, Husnlal Bhagatram and even Sonik Omi. If any of these names had laid claim to the song then Pakeezah would have faded from public memory much like so many other movies with better music.But the Pran effect persists, used unfailingly by detractors to show SJ in poor light and browbeat SJ music lovers even in SJ forum.
