Nothing like relaxing in the sun while lying on the bed, don’t you think so? A creative design of the Urban Cabin in Beijing makes it possible. Having a surface of just 15 m2, it offers a high degree of flexibility and a lots of fun possibilities: a bed that slides outside, a wall that rotates to become desk or an hammock for relaxing on top of the roof. The weather can’t be better these days in Beijing to enjoy one of my favorite details of the MINI LIVING Urban Cabin: the golden kaleidoscope ceiling above the central space (that one with a swing I showed you on my stories). It not only enlights the interior making it seem bigger and brighter, but also reflects the immediate environment you can observe from the interior. Imagine how cool it can be to be able to swing observing the environment trough the periscope. In this Beijing Design Week, a Dutch team formed by designers Borre Akkerdijk and Eva de Laat in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, is presenting a garment that purifies the polluted air urrounding the wearer.

The first iteration, presented at SXSW earlier this year, featured the GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities, but the team decided to tackle a local problem when developing a garment to show at Beijing Design Week.

The onepiece suit integrates conducting yarns and sensors enable to provide an air-cleanning technology called Cold Plasma. This technology can split oxygen and water molecules into free radicals. These radicals react easily with toxic gases, bacteria, viruses and dust in order to clean the air. Since our clothing is constantly in contact with the air surrounding us it creates an opportunity to clean the polluted air. The integrated air quality sensor generates location-based data. When combining this data from all the wearers, a precise analysis of the air quality can be made, enabling people to react more effectively to the pollution.

Although safe and fully functional, the garment was created as a step towards a connected wearable platform rather than a product to be marketed; but as Akkersdijk said, it’s the first step!
