“Caroline,” Hannah says again, and this is wonderful. Bela was saved by a madwoman. “She’s my vessel. I may have been able to survive that shot because I’d just arrived, but the next time won’t—”
“Your vessel,” Bela echoes. “So you’re—”
“A demon,” Bela blinks again, doing her best to hide her recoil. “What did you say?”
“An angel,” Hannah repeats, no less serious than the first time.
“You’re joking,” Bela says with disbelief.
Hannah wipes the blood off with the back of her hand. “No, I’m really not,” she says carefully, and Bela thinks back to the pair of wings she saw just before their great escape.
“We need to talk. But not here,” she says, glancing around.
“What, a parking lot in the middle of nowhere not secure enough for your angelic secrets?”
Bela opens her mouth to refute, and stops herself. Whatever Hannah is, Bela thinks keeping herself alive with this company around might not last so long after all.
