i. what does their bedroom look like?

much like the rest of her apartment does — organised with a striking efficiency, it doesn't even register that she rents a modest walk-up apartment in the east end (which encompasses crime alley) with only one bathroom. but hel's not all cold, efficient-only minimalist; her space is very personal, it's full of sentiment and artistic interests and tasteful decor and literary materials and all her favourite music and boxed wine she only opens for long evenings and labelled snacks and various memorabilia and her very sleepy lazy but kind-hearted cat; the bottom line is, every single thing in this apartment is chosen by helena with care, and that's why it feels too personal to let people in.

she maintains an indoor garden, a hobby she'd taken up only because her mom used to be into it, in various clusters across her house. i imagine her apt is a 2-3 bedroom 1 bathroom flat on the 6th floor, she uses the other 2 spaces for storage or vigilante workshop reasons anyway, so she chooses the one bedroom that has a balcony attached to it and that's where she keeps the bougainvillea and the cast iron plants (i imagine herbs get grown near the kitchen). the sun doesn't fully enter the room itself, but it's still good enough to keep her sane.

she has a pretty spacious bed; she may be frugal with most things, but she is not comprising over a good bed and everything that follows (mattress, pillows, blankets, even additional comforters for guests -- she could literally isolate herself for months and still think "i need the Good Plates for the guests" like WHAT GUESTS??? anyway she may detach herself from her family But she still has good taste from her upbringing x) because SLEEP IS IMPORTANT. she tends to sleep on the side so there's one lamp on the nightstand; she has a habit of reading before bed so even though her bookshelf is in the living room, she tends to have piles of books here and there in her bed of varying sorts. there's a backless/flat-topped sofa in the corner, a desk in the other corner, a cupboard, her wardrobe; a bible in the top drawer, a cross opposite the wall-clock; but where it truly gets interesting --

she keeps a very old action hero figurine on the wardrobe. purple knight, you don't recognise him even if you can guess it's supposed to be a comic hero. doesn't matter. this figurine used to be her brother's.

she already has a vinyl record wall in some other room, but in her bedroom? she keeps a couple of taylor swift cassettes -- like 1989, even if it's not her favourite album.

doug's toys. everywhere. help her. she's not moving them bc it's his space too.

she has some posters/stuff on the wall here and there -- something from her uni of palermo, a couple of photos with her hero friends, some medals from her school days, a drawing one of her former students made, and so on.

like -- the vibe i want for hel's space is like... she absolutely has u-haul sapphic moments where oftentimes her girlfriend would end up moving into her apartment even if they otherwise would never move into hel's space. it's safe, it's personal, and that's why helena doesn't ever want to bring people into her actual place like, 9/10 times. she tends to be the one to go to other people's places -- better yet, neutral public points. she likes her home, it's the same place she's been living at since her early twenties, but she's really not ready to show it to people because it really feels like her heart is exposed and bleeding all over the place and just! no. but it's also her space and it's something worth returning to after the toughest days.

xii. favourite book genre?

helena generally likes to read a wide variety of books -- both fiction and non-fiction; in italian, english, and she branches out to other languages like latin, ancient greek, hebrew, spanish, russian, etc especially because she'll try to read the original texts and not the translation if she can help it; different mediums & types -- and especially since her uni days, she's been in the habit of reading various literary essays, world history, political theory, english grammar, and of course, anything about epistemology, pedagogy, and psychology because teaching itself is a skill she wants to practise and better at every day. she's highly academic, and she's already read and analysed a lot of classic literature in school, so it makes sense that she'd advance up-to reading debates and metas about why shakespeare works, why lolita was misinterpreted, what crime and punishment truly tells us, and lastly, why the caged bird sings. one genre she has room for improvement is poetry, admittedly; plays, too. she appreciates them both, but she's far more comfortable with the prose of fictional and non-fictional novels.

but her favourite favourite? honestly, she's a sucker for messy dramas. she doesn't care if it's fictional or historical, if a book can make her feel like she's about to hear some toxic tea in the girls' groupchats and make her go "girl no WAY" then she's eating that up. this is her guilty pleasure but she doesn't care, she WANTS that gossip and self-indulgent messiness that DOES NOT hold back like SHOW HER ALL THE RECEIPTS. whether you are a fictional maid talking shit about your dumb queen or a real-life historical figure caught up in petty drama with some author via letters or a highschool girl writing in her diary about why braddy mcbradface is FAKING his grades, helena is invested. otherwise she dont car

xix. what do they think about before falling asleep at night?

nothing much, actually. at most, she'll go over her mental to-do list for the next day and see if she's prepared for the morning (like her lesson-plans, if she's ironed her shirt, if she's responded to that urgent e-mail from oracle, etc) just to be sure and then she's just knocked out. aforementioned, sleep is the one thing helena refuses to ever compromise or give up on. and given how her days usually tend to be taxing and spent doing things as a vigilante AND as a schoolteacher, she really turns off her brain the moment she crawls into bed, her phone automatically turns on the scheduled "do not disturb" mode, all e-mails from her co-workers are sent to spam SHE DOESN'T CARE she will read her book a jiffy and then she's KNOCKED OUT. she's often grateful for her aphantasia because she's glad to be above that dumb nightmare shit 🙄

xxv. how do they see themselves 5 years from today?

she doesn't. honestly.

helena's body moves in the present and her mind is often times stuck in the past. she has never once considered the future -- well, she has, but never in consideration to herself, through her own eyes.

now? she can only believe a future exists because she's a follower of science and refuses to fall for the eco-fascist fearmongering that the earth will explode soon; a future exists because her plants are growing and she has to feed doug soon and she plans to text dinah and zatanna back and meet up with that cute guy for coffee and check out the new dazzler album; a future exists because she wants tim and stephanie and cass and duke and jason to grow up and get older and be more of themselves than they're currently allowed to be; a future exists because she firmly believes in each and every single one of her students and they deserve to have hope and belief, nobody can take that away from them, and she will help them survive and live on and thrive to the next version of themselves they want to be; a future exists because gotham can, should, and will get better, because gotham is not doomed, because its people are still good people.

she just doesn't consider if she's even alive in that future. or in the next five seconds. or the next hour. as far as she's concerned, helena has to survive every single second because the next one is not guaranteed for her. she still mentally believes that the expiration date of her life was [insert any number] even if she's free from the darkness of the underworld now and she's her own person, a belief related to her former anger that she should've died with her family that night. she still lives because she may have been reckless but never suicidal; she won't realise how long she's lived until she's made to stop and look back and that epiphany hits her. but until then? who cares about the next five years, she's making this one very second count because she never misses.
