Review #14
As much as I love Belgian Dubbels the Rochefort 6 just didn’t hit as hard as others I have tried. I prefer the Westmalle but wouldn’t be upset if I was served this beer. The Rochefort 8 is also a better beer in my opinion. 6/10

Tre Fontane + Rochefort + Westmalle Sinergia ‘21 Dubbel (Picked up at de Bierkoning in Amsterdam). A 3 of 4. Drinks like a nice and standard Belgian dubbel -- smells of caramel and some dark fruit and has a moderate amount of sweetness. Moderate carbonation helps lift it off the palate a bit, though a decent amount of dark fruit and sweetness lingers in the finish.
Dancin’ Monks (Adelbert’s)

I don’t know about you but when I think about monks, I always picture bald men in strange robes who have either taken a vow of silence or teach kung fu. Also glasses. I feel like all of them wear glasses. Well now thanks to Adelbert’s all I can see are those same monks playing Dance Dance Revolution in a shitty mall surrounded by Asian kids who are absolutely going fucking crazy watching them slay. Also, don’t sit there all high and mighty criticizing me because I think all Asian kids play DDR because you know damn well it’s the truth. All they do in Asia is math, paint nails, do dry cleaning, and play DDR. Look it up. Anyways, with this beer I unfortunately end my Adelbert’s reviews for now and I stress FOR NOW because they have all been spectacular and I’m not going to be able to end my journey into their lineup yet. This has an almost cherry-like flavor to start with a nice sweetness before some plum and dark fruit mixes in with a mildly boozy flavor before closing up with some candied sugar notes. This is a damn delicious beer and I’m glad I’ve had an influx in new styles lately because I feel like I haven’t really given the Dubbel it’s proper dues yet so hopefully this is a step in the right direction for me correcting that. If this is your first Dubbel, pick this up, drink, dance, and repeat because this really is a great tasting brew that you need to try. As for those of you who have decided to look like a Dragon Ball Z character and put on your fancy orange robes, pick this up and power up then blast it down your throat because it kicks ass. Word.

Brewday - Belgian Dubbel
It's been a while but I thought I'd throw down a brewday today. Mainly because I brewed so much I ran out of bottles and storage space. I originally had the ingredients in for a Belgian Blonde but decided at the last minute that I had enough pale beers brewed and that I wanted to use my Red Oak Honeycomb again. Oaking a pale might not have tasted quite right so I switched it up a little and beefed the Blonde into a Dubbel. So slightly modified malt bill was 73% Barke Pilsner, 7.3% Barke Munich, 4.4% Biscuit, 3.6% Torrified Wheat, 1.5% Melanoidin, 1.5% Special B, 1.5% Roasted Wheat and finally 7.3% Belgian Candi Sugar rocks. Last year's Saaz where quite high alpha at 5.3% so just 15g for 60 minutes and then 30g for 30. Cool to 21c and ferment with Mangrove Jack's M47 Belgian Abbey Ale and see where we go from there.
I tried some underletting for the mash and it was a bit of a nightmare, I don’t think the thin filters of the BrewZilla work very well with this technique. So it was a bit of an arse of the Brewday, despite this I managed 72% efficiency which is damn good for such a big beer. OG was 1.070.
I also decided to soak the oak honeycomb I used previously in my Impy Stout to be added later. Can't waste too much quality Cognac on the oak though, hence bagging it up. I think the flavours will beef up the Dubbel well. I shall report back soon, and if I forget to blog everything till loads later like previously then don’t forget I post real time updates on Instagram and Facebook.

Source of Styles #11: Dubbels / Tripels
Source of Styles #11: Dubbels / Tripels - perhaps the best export from Belgium? #craftbeer #beer #japan
Welcome to the eleventh in our series of “Source of Styles”, with this focus being on dubbels / tripels which are perhaps the best export Belgium has given to the world – besides their Belgian french fries of course! Due to the inextricable link between the two styles of beers, we’ve decided to put them into one category.
The main reasoning for this is that the names refer to the amount of malt…

4: Eastbound Brewing Co Fancy Walker (Belgian Dubbel)
I know I know, this is red and not all that dark. But I’m going to allow it because 1: this is my blog so I can do what I want. 2: Dubbels taste good. This one in particular tastes really good. I mean, if you go somewhere that doesn’t offer a stout, which when I went Eastbound didn’t, then this is a very good option to go with. It’s flavourful, smooth, easy to drink. It’s everything you would want in a beer except for not being a stout. Although having been drinking with my wife and playing Exploding Kittens May have made the situation more fun.
