My favorite thing in life is reading book reviews on Amazon, particularly when discussing bigoraphies/autobiographies. I love to hear people say, "It's so self-serving, but it's good, but it should have looked at the other side of the story, too." Or when they say, "Its too wordy, like she intended to make it longer than it needed to be." Really? Really? This is a book written by Belle Boyd, about Belle Boyd being a Confederate spy full of secessionist leanings. It was written between about 1861 and 1864 (-ish) by an incredibly self-serving woman and it was published in 1865. What in creation did you actually thing you were getting when you bought it?
Holy shit, you guys, I'm not even kidding when I say I'm pretty sure seventeen-year-old Belle Boyd from Martinsburg, VA is my new freaking hero. She was plain but saw herself as beautiful, listing all her perfections to her male cousin in hopes to find a husband. She terrorized her parent's feast because they wouldn't let her join. She was incredibly intelligent in school, rebellious (she used her diamond ring to carve her name into the window at her college) with a perfect curtsy and damned determined. I mean, homegirl sat in her window and watched the soldiers. She refused to sew and darn socks and bake bread and instead just walked down the street waving at the Rebels. Belle Boyd organized trips into the Rebel camps to visit. She owned an 1848 Colt pistol and promised herself she'd use it if she had to. And boy did she ever. Homegirl shot a man dead in her own home because he forced his way in, scared her younger siblings, terrified her maid, called her a rebel and attempted to assault her mother. She shot a man, spread open her arms and declared:
"Only cowards shoot women. Now shoot!" WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING.
When Belle was eleven, her parents declared her too young to attend their dinner party, given for a group of Virginia officials. Instead of leading or protesting, she went to the stable, saddled up her horse, Fleeter, and rode him into the dining room, interrupting the second course .... Belle looked down on everyone, watching her mother's mouth gape, her hand rising to cover it. She yanked at the reins and cleared her throat. 'Well,' she said, 'my horse is old enough, isn't he?'
