The Bellefield mansion in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The oldest portion of the house dates to 1795 and was built for Judge John Johnston. In 1885, New York State Senator Thomas Newbold acquired the property. In the early 1900s, the main house was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style, a number of buildings and features were added, and a formal walled garden was designed by landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand. Most of these changes were completed by 1917, and the overall landscape still appears much as it did during that time. The #Bellefield estate is adjacent to and north of the Roosevelt home, Springwood. Bellefield became part of the Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site in 1975 when its owner, Gerald Morgan Jr. (grandson of Thomas Newbold), donated a portion of the Bellefield estate to the @NationalParkService. The park preserves 75 acres of the former Bellefield estate. Scenic Hudson protects an additional 86-acre parcel of the former estate. The mansion currently serves as park headquarters for Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps103 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #natinalhistoricsite #iloveny #hydepark #hydeparkny #hudsonrivervalley #hudsonrivervalleynha #smallparksaturday #architecture #archi_ologie (at Home of Franklin D. Within these Walls
The beautiful walled garden at Bellefield, County Offaly has featured here before (see A Gardener’s Legacy « The Irish Aesthete). Both the garden and its adjacent house were bequeathed to the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland four years ago following the death of its owner, Angela Jupe and since then it has served as an ideal venue for a series of events open to the public. On Saturday July…

A Gardener’s Legacy
This week marks the first anniversary of the death of architect and garden designer Angela Jupe at her home at Bellefield, County Offaly, where the Irish Aesthete had paid a visit just a few weeks before that unhappy event. After graduating from university, she worked for a number of architectural firms before heading up a design team at the Industrial Development Agency (IDA). But by the…
