Rin wasn’t normally in a bad mood. Normally she was able to find the bright side of almost any situation. But today she’d just woken up feeling a little sullen and not in the mood for anything that she normally found fun. And that included being around other people. 

“Can’t I...just go for a walk today? No one would really miss me after all,” Master Jakens words came back to her. All those times he’d called her annoying or a burden.

did she really ? she wondered . eyes of violet orbs revealed nothing but a mixture of curiosity & prejudice as she glanced at her from over the pauldron of her shoulder . how can she —— a priestess , one adored by the gods & humans alike , know what it’s like to be the minority ? alone in a sea of faces ? diminished just because you were born different . a flaw in this divided society.. ( or so both , humans & demons alike seemed to call it . )

“ such naiveté ” she’d say.. the half demon thought it daring & insensitive… for the woman to call herself that . different . just for the sake to share empathy . but ignorance to another’s story can often lead to misunderstandings that are noticed when it is too late..

a  blush  became  visible  as  soon  as  she  processed  the  words  in  her  mind .  head  tilting  slightly  as  if  to  hide  it .  shy .  still  a tyro  when  it  came to  receive  compliments..  the  type  that  normal  girls  her  age  like  to  hear  once  in  a  while .  but  she  was  no  normal  girl .    

❛   thanks..   ❜  she  muttered  softly  ,  words  barely  escaping  her  lips .  trying  to  focus  back  on  the  brush  on  her  hair  than  on  the  adjective  the  other  used  to  describe  her .  ‘  beautiful  ’  she  said..   how  do  normal  ,  village girls  usually  deal  with  a  compliment  such  as  that?  she  wondered..

surprise  was  evident  when  she  felt  the  other’s  head  on  her  lap .  brows  raised  ,  eyes  widened  ,  mouth  circled  ..  she  panicked .  internally  begging  her  mind  to   compare  it  to  the  many  times  kirara  would  lay  on  her  lap  for  grooming .  but  unsuccessful  ,  she  remained  tense .  

(    no  previous  warning  could  have  prepared  her  enough  for  this .    )

after  a  couple  of  seconds  processing  what  just  happened  –––    hesitantly  ,  she  looked  down  at  the  head  on   her  lap .  was  she  supposed  to  pat  her  head?  gently?  ...  what  about  removing  the  piece  of  hair  covering  her  face?  

despite  the  questions  in  her  head  ,  the  half  demon  stayed  still  ;  unmoving .  observing  before  lifting  her  head  &  stare  at  the  horizon  once  more .  this  was  new  ,  but  she  promised  as  a  repay  to  endure  it  for  as  long  as  the  other  could  sleep .  in  any  case   ,   what  was  she  to  do? ––––  but  to  be  the  one  to  guard  the  priestess’  dreams  when  she  ,  herself  ,  could  not  visit  that  place  at  night?

Breath is heavy, shaken as Bankotsu struggled to stay upright. He was frustrated. Frustrated at the circumstances he found himself in -- and frustrated at HIMSELF for being so weak as to need to grovel at another mortal’s feet. But he would not allow himself to die here -- he refused to waste his third chance of life.

And so he found himself here, face to face with the undead priestess he had come in contact with many years ago. His lips twitch, visibly struggling to force the words out, before he finally relents. “I need your help.”
