hi, hope you're having a good day ! if you're up for it, had another question. I recently learned that flower was first overall draft pick in 2003, and I was wondering - that's wildly impressive right ? like a lot more impressive than, say, a forward or defenseman going first right ? also please free to ignore if it's a stupid question
Oooooh boy it was was more than just impressive, it was like. A never happened before and has not ever happened again kind of an event. And, there’s some added context of who else was in the 2003 draft; being chosen over Eric Staal and Patrice Bergeron is certainly something. 2003 was an excellent draft year with a lot of great players (all of who are now like 40 so isn’t that wild hahaha).
Flower is the only goalie to ever go first over all. Like. Ever in the history of the nhl draft ever (unless my father has lied to me, but I fact checked so).
A couple of other goalies (Carey Price, Spencer Knight, and others I can’t remember) have gone in the first round, but Flower is the only 1OA goalie.
I literally thought it wasn’t possible for a team to pick a goalie with the 1OA lottery pick, when the Pens picked Flower I asked my Dad if they were even allowed to do that. And this was before Geno, before Sid. In my brain, this is the moment the team that would become My Pittsburgh Penguins began (also we got to go see him play in WBS one and that was so much fun).
Marc Andre Fluery is a unique, special, beloved, odd man. The whole only goalie to go first over all isn’t even close to my favorite thing about him.
