If it wasn't already sad enough that Auggie had found himself at the carnival alone, with Rosie off at her dad's for the weekend, of course he also had to find himself seated right next to one of the very last people he wanted to see.
Two of the four singles in their shared car were already talking animatedly as they started to move further away from the ground, but Auggie was shoulder to shoulder with his ex-boyfriend, both of them quiet.
Auggie had spent months ducking around corners when he caught just a glimpse of someone who might be Ben, in the grocery store or the library or even on the street, only for the two of them to be herded into the same tiny, confined space together at a carnival, of all places.
"So. Um," he said, unable to fathom spending the entire ride in complete silence. "Been a while. How's, uh, your summer been?"
