HOBO JOHNSON AND THE LOVEMAKERS
So I got to see the bois at their Liverpool gig 🤩 best night ever, can't wait to see them again 💜
Hobo Johnson & the Lovemakers Headline PlayStation Theater Thursday
After getting kicked out of his family’s house and living in a car in his teens, Frank Lopes Jr. (vocals, guitar and keys), influenced by the likes of Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar, took on the persona of the train-of-thought rapper Hobo Johnson. He began gaining fans beyond Sacramento, Calif., thanks to a video series on YouTube and eventually acquired a backing band, the Lovemakers: Ben Lerch (drums), David Baez-Lopez (bass), Derek Lynch (guitar) and Jordan Moore (guitar and keys). Their second full-length, The Rise of Hobo Johnson (stream it here), filled with what AllMusic calls “songs with sincere themes about chasing love and relationships and dealing with everyday trials and failures,” came out in 2017. They made a big splash in 2018, becoming viral sensations with their Tiny Desk Contest entry and Tiny Desk Concert. “This is a band always on the verge of emotional explosions, all while Frank Lopes, aka Hobo Johnson, is quoting Shakespeare and making references to Jay-Z, the Front Bottoms song ‘Twin Size Mattress’ and so much more,” says NPR Music. Hobo Johnson & the Lovemakers returned this past September with their third long-player, The Fall of Hobo Johnson (stream it here). “As Hobo Johnson follows in the footsteps of Ed Sheeran, Lizzo and Lewis Capaldi as a newly appointed member of the proudly unconventional pop stars club, his latest body work is a worthy representation of who he is: a talented and undeniably funny underdog with an addictive persona,” offers NME. Now in mid-tour form, Hobo Johnson & the Lovemakers headline PlayStation Theater on Thursday night. Arrive early to catch three bands, Mom Jeans, the Philharmonik and Nate Curry, opening the show. (The same lineup also plays Starland Barlloom on Sunday.)
Hobo Johnson and the Lovemakers Come to Brooklyn Steel Tomorrow
