“CHEF’S TABLE” [Netflix series]

If you watched Netflix’s Chef’s Table series, you might note how much of the Niki Nakayama episode focused on her gender and asked her to talk a lot about what it’s like to be a woman in [a Japanese family / a sushi restaurant / a kaiseki restaurant / etc]. Funny enough though, it doesn’t focus so much on what it’s like to be a woman in this series — she’s the only one this season.

But, you say, what could be more interesting than learning about what it’s like to be a woman in _________? Dunno, maybe the process behind how she actually puts together a kaiseki menu, or how she came to be the type of person who makes it a priority to know whether you previously dined at her restaurant, so you wouldn’t get the same dish twice. In Los Angeles! Where hospitality is often considered dead. If only TPTB were as fascinated by that stuff as it was Massimo Bottura’s love for parmesan cheese.
