Hewwo!
23.) What would you say if you could say one thing to your favorite character?
“I’m so happy you exist. It’s a good thing.”
Although in reality if I was faced with Shadow I’d probably just end up trying to hug him and crying ahaha... He’s so got damn cute
32.) Most underrated character, GO
Yeah I’m gonna go with Big. He’s a good man.
39.) Which game is your golden standard?
This is a difficult question, and it is going to be long, because my criteria for Best Sonic Game is a little weird.
My favorites tend to be the ones that are easier, because of my own...i guess clumsiness or lack of coordination? Speedy platforming is NOT something I can do well. Sonic Colors isn’t a bad game, but its platforming damn near killed me. If a game has Shadow in it, that automatically boosts it in my heart. And my favorites still all have something I think keeps them from reaching perfection, so saying that one is a gold standard...its not truly what I think.
My perfect Sonic game would be a relatively easy, well-written game with good characterization and ability to play as multiple characters, which has Shadow in an important role. (The exact kind of gameplay isn’t too important, so long as its not autorun or motion-controls.) So this is NOT an objective This Is How Sonic Games Should Be.
Like just as a run-down of my opinions:
Secret Rings and Black Knight had beautiful stories, and great characterization. They also had the difficult-to-control, motion controlled auto-run mechanic.
Unleashed had lovely scenery, fun fast day stage game-play, and let me beat the shit out of monsters at night. And it had the tricky platforming and bottomless pits with the werehog (the werehog himself wasn’t the problem; i love beating things up! But platforming with him...).
Sonic Heroes was fun and bright and colorful and I loved getting to play as the teams and seeing them interact with each other. Metal Sonic getting actual character and becoming the bad guy is also a standout (I really like Metal Sonic). I think maybe the controls were kind of sticky? And also the only route I was able to beat was Team Rose. Maybe. I might not have beaten the final boss, I can’t remember.
Shadow the Hedgehog was a ride and a half playing as my baby boy, murdering whatever I wanted. And it had slippery controls, and the difficulty of the individual missions is all over the place. I wish everyone wasn’t shooting at me regardless of whether I’m on their side or not, though it does kind of enhance my immersion. It’s stupid and frustrating and pretty much is what would happen in that situation, because everyone in it is operating on different ideas of who they think Shadow is. GUN is under orders to take him in, the black arms are just...vicious, and Eggman doesn’t give a shit so long as the aliens get off his lawn. Shadow’s just a means to an end that they don’t care about and. And I have a lot of feelings about this game.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were so good, they let me play as multiple fun characters with intertwining stories that made me feel something. They also have difficulty spikes between the different play modes (FROGGY) and the emerald radar only looking for one shard at a time in SA2 is a nuisance. I loved them but they were hard....
Sonic Generations had an easy-to-grasp plot and a good sense of progression. I also got stuck on one of the hard boss fights and quit halfway through. I wish it had gone more into the other characters there; it was nice to see everybody, but they didn’t do or say much.
Sonic Forces has a difficulty level I’m able to actually BEAT, and playing as an avater is SUPER FUN. And it has a frankly ridiculous story, with no idea what tone it wants, with Classic Sonic shoehorned in. And why the FUCK is Shadow murdering people now.
If it’s not on the list I either forgot it, don’t have strong opinions about it, or haven't played it.
So for me specifically the "golden standard sonic game” is...Sonic Heroes, apparently! Shadow’s in it, I can play it pretty well, it’s got multiple characters to play as, bam. SA2 is a close second (IT’S JUST REALLY HARD).
