#Repost from @theblaquelioness with @regram.app ... Like a lot of early inventors, #BenjaminBanneker was primarily self-taught. The son of former enslaved Africans, Benjamin worked on the family tobacco farm and received some early education from a Quaker school. But most of his advanced knowledge came from reading. At 15 he took over the farm and invented an irrigation system to control water flow to the crops from nearby springs. As a result of Banneker's innovation, the farm flourished – even during droughts. But it was his clock invention that really propelled the reputation of Benjamin Banneker. In the early 1750s, Benjamin borrowed a pocket watch from a wealthy acquaintance, took the watch apart and studied its components. After returning the watch, he created a fully functioning clock entirely out of carved wooden pieces. The clock was amazingly precise, and would keep on ticking for decades. As the result of the attention his self-made clock received, Banneker was able to start up his own watch and clock repair business. And Benjamin Banneker's accomplishments didn't end there. Borrowing books on astronomy and mathematics from a friend, Benjamin engorged himself in the subjects. Putting his newfound knowledge to use, Banneker accurately predicted a 1789 solar eclipse. In the early 1790s, Banneker added another job title to his resume – author. Benjamin compiled and published his Almanac and Ephemeris of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland (he would publish the journal annually for over a decade), and even sent a copy to secretary of state Thomas Jefferson along with a letter urging the abolition of slavery. Without Benjamin Banneker, our nation's capital would not exist as we know it. After a year of work, the Frenchman hired by George Washington to design the capital, L'Enfant, stormed off the job, taking all the plans. Banneker, placed on the planning committee at Thomas Jefferson's request, saved the project by reproducing from memory, in two days, a complete layout of the streets, parks, and major buildings. Thus Washington, D.C. itself can be considered a monument to the genius of this great man. #BlackExcellence #theblaquelioness
Benjamin Banneker was a man of many abilities. Born between 2 between 1731-1806. He did numerous of things such as write six consecutive almanacs and research astrology. His impact in society came with one Thomas Jefferson.
In 1731 Banneker was considered a respected Virginian and Jefferson was Secretary of State in Virginia. He quickly saw how slaves were treated and wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson describing how the talk about liberty was false and how his society needed to change their false perception and views of them. He describes that he is also of African descent in the letter. He mentions that he may be judged for writing the letter however he mentions how hypocritical Jefferson would be if he did judge him since they fought for independence against the British. Banneker was able to publish this letter and Jefferson response to this letter in an Almanac posted in 1793. The posting of this letter earned Banneker ampuls loads of praise from other society members.
If you look at the significance of this letter you can see that a man of color had a voice. He outspoken the issue he saw in society and it got him very far. He was published as an African American male in society though a slave owner he mentioned how he was freed and how others should be free to and experience what he had. Banneker role in this time frame should highly be considered.

Maryland – Banneker, Mead, and Pollinators
Maryland is home to a mostly self educated Free man. Benjamin Banneker was not just a Surveyor, but an entrepreneur. Truly a man before his time.
Maryland offers agricultural gifts that many are not familiar with. I had the pleasure of exploring Maryland as a tourist, as I unintentionally paused. Donning my mask I signed up for two programs at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park. There’s a…
