Franklin understood that empires crumble from the outside in. As tensions rose in the colonies, he predicted Britain's grasp on America would weaken. Years later, he helped negotiate the very treaty that ended British rule in the U.S.

This building in Civitavecchia, Italy, destroyed by American bombs on May 14, 1943, has been preserved as a memorial to the dead. A plaque on the wall quotes Benjamin Franklin: "There never was a good war, or a bad peace."

Second Congrès Continental

Le Second Congrès continental était l'organe de délégués qui gouvernait les treize colonies et, plus tard, les États-Unis pendant la guerre d'Indépendance américaine. Entre sa première session en mai 1775 et sa dissolution en mars 1781, le Congrès supervisa l'effort de guerre, adopta la Déclaration d'indépendance et les Articles de la Confédération, et conclut une alliance avec la France.
