Bent Brewstillery in Roseville, MN. I had one of those deal-of-the-day coupons for this, so today we went over to try it out. It's a cute place tucked away in an industrial area, but very close to a shopping center. The Nordic blonde is nice, not too sour, some pleasant floral notes on a clean base that has just enough character without overpowering it. I would buy this again, 8.5/10 Moar historical IPA, very light for an IPA. Sessionable, for sure. Nice bright citrus hop finish. Not too bitter, which is good because otherwise it would be out of balance. Nice for a hot day when you don't want to drink a thick, 10% abv drink but want hops. I would buy again, 7.5/10 London Export. Wow, definitely a lot more character than a lot of stouts. Chocolatey, ummm, I lack the ability to adequately describe the flavors but it's nicely complex. Pretty intense flavor, but light mouthfeel. That might be because it's on nitro. A dry bitterness lingers in the mouth, similar to after eating some very dark chocolate. Good stuff, but I am not sure if I would buy this again or not, since it lingers a bit too much for my taste. 7/10 Uber Lupin, black IPA. A nice sharpness is how I would describe this. This doesn't have the smokey, burnt taste that some black IPAs have, but that's good because those flavors don't work well with IPAs. Nicely balanced, fairly thin mouthfeel for an 8.3% beer. Black IPAs are fun because they sort of mess with your mind, since they're far lighter in taste than they look. At this point I'm on my ninth 5oz drink, so you probably shouldn't listen to anything I say. No fear, I have a sober driver. So anyway, this doesn't have the bright nose that the historical IPA did, but that's fine, I think this is nicely balanced. I would buy this again, 8.5/10.

Sunday – I’ve admired Gabriel Gomez’s puppetry at Lyric Arts and I’ll be interviewing him about their upcoming show Bunnicula for RedCurrent. In the evening I’m heading to Intermedia Arts to see Danami’s Soulnami show. It’s part concert and part theater and will celebrate the release of his album “Before the Wait.”

I’m not shy about saying that Bent Brewstillery is my favorite taproom in the Twin Cities. You’ll find them in Roseville just off of 35W and County Road C. In January 2014, they officially merged with Pour Decisions and the taproom opened in September.

Because they were taking time to better establish the brewery side of things, the distillery part (brewery… distillery… brewstillery… get it?) got put on the back burner. But in November, they started offering a Private Tour & Tasting Deal on ESPN 1500’s site and I snatched one up right away. Then we waited. And waited.

On Christmas Eve their Ghost Gunner Gin hit the shelves and I picked up one from the nearby Cellars. I’m not much of a gin person, but these gin & tonics were yummy! Unfortunately, the tour was still not available but it was nice to have this on hand to tide me over.

And then we finally got to take the tour on March 14. Bartley Blume, owner and head distiller, talked to us about the brewery and some of their plans for the future. The distillery side takes place in a smallish area but there are some cool things going on in there.

Bartley told us about Bent’s gin, rum, whiskey and poitin. We learned the Gunner Ghost Gin has fifteen botanicals in it. We learned that they using potato skins from The Anchor Fish & Chips to make the poitin, which they’re classifying as a “deliciously smooth Irish moonshine” and to me, tastes pretty similar to vodka. I love the collaboration part aspect of this!

They’re doing some other fun experimenting with the barrels as well. For instance, right now they have gin aging in a barrel that already contained Dark Fatha stout aged in a whiskey barrel. I can’t wait to find out how those flavors affect the gin. Also check out the cocktail recipe Bent created below and give it a try!

When the tour finished, we had flights waiting for us and we dove right in. I also purchased a bottle of the #2 Orange Blossom Gewurtztraminer Pyment to enjoy at dinner with some girlfriends; it’s a honey wine made with grapes and I would call it champagne-esque. My friends enjoyed it as well, and I loved sharing something unique with them.

As you can see, you really never know what you’re going to find at Bent Brewstillery on any given day. They welcome food trucks regularly along with live music and there are games available to play, along with a patio to enjoy when the weather’s nice. Currently, the 1500 ESPN site is offering a Private Tour and Tasting for Two for $25 – definitely a great deal! Bent also has a beer and liquor finder on their site to find the closest place for you to purchase their products.

Top 4: Craft Beer Walkabout

On March 21, our Roseville store will host a Craft Beer Walkabout. While more breweries are still in the works, four of our favorites are confirmed and delighted to attend: 

Bent Brewstillery We take a ton of pride in the success of this local brewery (who also make a killer gin). Recently named by the Star Tribune "best new brewery in the Metro," Bent Brewstillery is innovative, diverse and, by their own admission, unclassifiable. See what we mean when you taste it on March 21. 

Bent Paddle Brewing Co. One of the hottest breweries to hit the metro area in while. Named both for a literal bent paddle and as a nod to the northwoods backdrop, Bent Paddle is just one of the reasons why Duluth is quickly becoming a beer brewing haven. 

Tin Whiskers Brewing The St. Paul-based open-source brewery with a mission to make *technically excellent* beer (because what else would brewers with UMN electrical engineering degrees produce).  We kind of love their website's references to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy almost as much as their beers. 

Founders Brewing Co. A brewery that needs no introduction at this point. Their story is one that speaks to idealism everywhere: after attempting to brew for the masses, they switched gears and started to brew for themselves. The rest is straight-up Kentucky Breakfast Stout history.
