In 1749, John Cleyland's book, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, later renamed The Memoirs of Fanny Hill, was published in London. It was a publishing sensation that resonated in several countries, becoming something akin to (and even more so than) Fifty Shades of Grey. Let's examine what it had to offer for its time to achieve such a phenomenon.
Literature reflecting social change
The book recounts the adventures of a young, naive, orphaned peasant girl who arrives in London and, initially without realizing it, becomes a prostitute. You'll have to read it to understand how her naiveté and lack of comprehension of the euphemisms used by those around her lead her to this profession. The important thing is that Fanny Hill manages remarkably well to offer her services and, despite numerous obstacles and countless adventures that enliven the text, ends her career as a wealthy and beloved woman. This was a relatively novel argument before, one that has been repeated a thousand times since, but Cleland's original text marks a major innovation in another sense…
What is striking is how her erotic descriptions abandon all references to small birds or nature, as was previously the case with sensual metaphors in writings of this kind. Now, the analogies with poetic interest for the carnal are drawn from mining, manufacturing, or banking. Something has changed forever. The male sex is now called a "weapon," a "tool," a "lever," a "spring," and sexual relations are now described in the manner of engineering and production. The prostitute is transformed into a "machine," and her paid amorous activities belong to the world of investment and resource management. Fanny Hill describes how the madam monitors the market in order to recruit new "merchandise" for the "use" of her "clients"; or how she "bargains" the virginity of her employees with those seeking this exclusive and fleeting commodity; They talk about the need to ensure the "circulation" of girls for the good of "commerce." And so on.
Cleland uses all these terms and describes the new social order 20 years before Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations. It's as if sex had been industrialized before everything else, which would confirm the fact that prostitution was indeed a precursor profession. The world was heading towards a profound transformation, already foreshadowed by Aretino's innovation, which we saw in a previous post in this series: to pause and describe (coldly, some might say) sex in its gestures and details as an attractive, autonomous activity that could exist without a moral, legal, social, or even romantic context. Meanwhile, in the real world, the worker was no longer the son of a friend or a potential brother-in-law, an ally, or a devout believer whom you already knew from your childhood community. On the path to what we know as modern industrial capitalism, human beings are judged first and foremost by their productive capacity as workers and the quality of their labor. They must, in principle, be efficient and consistent, which guarantees that their product will be of high quality and abundant, with moral and social aspects being valued only afterward.
Fanny Hill already belongs to the industrial world; she is a sex worker displaced (uprooted) from her birthplace, preoccupied with her effectiveness in providing pleasure, knowing she will be judged on her professional skills. Sex is thus transformed into a technical competency, insofar as the naive peasant girl learns to perfect it, increasing her commercial value. Fanny Hill also perhaps represents the first modern image of a self-made woman. She is, in effect, the emergence of a previously unknown female character: freed from her family of origin, Fanny Hill does not suffer domestic confinement. Motherhood is not in her plans; her relationships with potential husbands are always financial, and she is primarily concerned with her career. For Angela Carter, the first examples of liberated women in modern literature are found in Sade; Juliette immediately understands that her sex can serve as a commodity and that one can only escape slavery by becoming a tyrant. Throughout all those pages describing sexual escapades, the heroines relentlessly affirm the creed of an individualism that would be dubbed "bourgeois" a few years later. What is most surprising is that this typically modern discourse on objective efficiency and technical competence had appeared in the p-graphic field years before becoming the official doctrine of industrialization, and that sex as an activity in itself, separate from the rest of life, is not something that future adult films present as a novelty.
Today we're discussing the origin of pornography, and the fact is that nudity in art intended for privileged classes existed long ago, but it was never considered as our pornography, and there's something in its history between that and adult magazines or films… Does the name Aretino ring a bell?
Origin of the genre/El origen del género
According to some scholars, the history of modern p -graphy begins with the work of Pietro Bacci, known as Aretino. He founded a school of thought, at least in the sense that numerous authors after him sought to sell their own works claiming they had been written by the master himself, and he earned the title of the father of his own literary genre: the Aretinesque […] synonymous throughout Europe with lurid tales of sexual acrobatics.
His work marks a crucial turning point, placing p -graphy, understood as obscene works, on a path from which it never deviated in the following 500 years. This novelty would continue to solidify after the Italian Renaissance, in which modern p -graphy was discovered and distinguished from other forms of eroticism. Historians of the genre are mistaken in seeking this difference in content. Themes, language, and expressions may change, and some sexual descriptions may become more precise; but the Renaissance did not invent new ways of making love, and Aretino does not depict a sex different from that of Boccaccio or the risqué folk songs of the Middle Ages. His novelty lies elsewhere.
In 1517, Martin Luther published his Protestant theses, a historically more significant event for our present than the works of Aretino. The printing press meant that within two weeks all of Germany could read Luther's text, making it a controversial topic in public debate. This demonstrated that a written work could now be disseminated faster than censors and book burners could act. The printing press gave new power to works that some did not want circulated, allowing both Luther's Reformation to take hold and Aretino to enrich himself with his equally controversial work. The first steps toward a separation of Church and State would continue to be taken, just as p -graphy would benefit from this in its parallel development.
But this type of literature would soon reach a point of exhaustion in terms of themes and combinations. Little new can be said after the Marquis de Sade described decapitating someone while performing anal sex on them as the ultimate pleasure, in order to benefit from their post-mortem rectal contractions, but the divine Marquis is so named for his savage inventiveness. We will almost always find more familiar things in that half-millennium of obscene literature: the fascination with the body (especially the female body), the curious allure of voyeurism, breast fetishism… A result of repression and fear of sex, or of ignorance and guilt. It wasn't so much the themes or the tone of these stories that changed, but rather the place these works occupied in society, becoming increasingly successful.
Aretino's twist doesn't consist solely of portraying the powerful in their perverse and/or impotent nakedness, but rather in adding a critical and mocking edge to the formula regarding the customs of his time, making gossip and lurid details part of the formula that would later define mass-market p -graphy. His narrative p -graphy is, on the one hand, documentary and highly descriptive of sexual practices, and on the other, an inversion or satire of the social order in the everyday life surrounding bedroom acts. Aretino doesn't invent the satire or parody inherent in p -graphy, much less the description of sexuality. But he is the one who uses the former to spice up the atmosphere and create the situations that lead to the latter.
1x15: Criticism of criticism/La crítica a la crítica
In recent weeks I have posted criticisms of the dominant P model in this series of posts. Just as there is not only one type of P (mainstream), there are many voices about adult content. Today I recover, extract and translate some words from the Frenchman Bernard Arcand, who in his 1991 book on anthropology of the P addressed the problems of feminism with adult content.
Women had to necessarily undergo sexual liberation and define themselves as beings endowed with their own sexuality, regaining control of their bodies in order to no longer be subjected to the libidinous and reproductive wills of males […] Solutions had to be explored and this is precisely what historical p -graphy proposed: a subversion of the conservative ideology of romantic love and heterosexual monogamy that had always placed women in the role of mothers and housewives.
[…] The first models of liberated women in European literature were Fanny Hill by John Cleland and Juliette de Sade, women who finally break away from exclusively procreative sexuality and who are heroines by using their sex agonistically for their benefit and to ensure their social success; […] that they achieve in their career through cheating, cynicism and evil, which makes them equal to any man […] Even in a large part of modern and mainstream pornography there is a dominant model of female sexuality, with agency, which offers both a radical response to the old model and a response to feminist questioning: […] women who fully live their sexuality by being active to the point of becoming sexually aggressive […] P-graphy and feminism have sometimes come to share part of the same discourse: with the era of passive victims over, It is time for the sex of women to assert itself.
Part of the feminist movement interpreted adult films, during their popularity in the 1970s, as a reactionary response to their own movement, which they saw as embodying the desire to dominate women. Meanwhile, conservative ideology viewed them as obscene and unacceptable carnal displays of moral decay. Today, I revisit and combine texts from the previous version of this series to bring you the words of Bernard Arcand and his anthropological perspective.
1x14: The enemies of P-graphy
P -graphy is intended for adults capable of understanding that what they see is not a reflection of the real world. But its detractors speak of the bad example these adult fantasies set for society. There is no consensus regarding the existence of danger in them. Analyses and studies are contradictory, depending on who is watching or judging. It is never the image itself that is disturbing, but rather the reaction it can provoke in others; that is why debates on the subject always revolve around what is objectionable. As we saw in previous chapters, what is shown in p-graphy always unsettles the powerful or the privileged if their access to it ceases to be exclusive and becomes universal. When it can no longer be argued that it should be kept away from the poor and women, as was done during the Industrial Revolution, the term 'social problem' is used, and the new victim to be protected from its influence is exclusively male, regardless of skin color or economic status (it would be politically incorrect to make such distinctions now), but possessing the traits of weakness of spirit, brutality, and becoming the new feared idiot. He who supposedly doesn't understand what he sees is inclined toward violence and imitation, and must be kept away from this content because he would become a threat to the community. Different names and labels, similar fears as centuries ago. Fear of the retarded, the deviant, the uncultured, and the social outcast, inflamed by adult content.
For feminist critics, other factors unrelated to classism come into play. They combat an unacceptable traditional model of faithful and compliant wives that condemns promiscuity or those who take agency in their sexual desires to contempt. This structure forces them to always be beautiful and seductive, yet passive when they yield to another's desires. Adult films didn't depict any revolution; they portrayed women as sexual beings, initially without condemnation, but only insofar as they were available for men's use, slaves to their whims, objectified once again.
