worker drip friday
I went to see Ade talk about his biography tonight. A lovely evening. He just stood on the stage - no chairs, no one else with him, his only props were a short slide show of pictures and a glass of wine after the interval - and talked to us about why he'd chosen to write his biography now. He was funny and self-effacing. He read some passages, recalled a few stories from his life and career, interacted with the audience in a funny, conversational way - one woman kept whooping, and he told her he was using her as his laughometer. After the interval, he did a Q&A of questions audience members could submit. Someone had asked, "Have you got a video?" to which he replied, with a smile, "Fuck off." There were two people in the front row dressed as Richie and Eddie in Terror, and they handed him a little teddy dressed like Vyvyan at the end. Overall, just a really great evening. I'm trying to think, and I don't think I've ever seen Ade in a performance context quite like that. He wasn't in character as anybody and, although he was obviously being deliberately amusing and going through a script of sorts he must have planned, there was a certain feeling of spontaneity and openness to it all. He's a sweetheart.
i just got ade's book Berserker! and am making my way through it now, did you have any thoughts on it after reading it? (presuming you have) :)
Oh hi! Sorry I didn't spot this!
So, shamefully, I still haven't finished it. 😂 I've started it, but I'm not that far in yet. Ade is still a kid. To be fair to me, I've had so much stuff I've needed to read for uni that reading for leisure has been on the back burner. That's changing now, but my leisure pile is fucking massive and I keep adding to it.
That said, I've really enjoyed what I've read so far. Rik's autobiography is obviously very tongue in cheek and more a piece of work for his comic persona than the memoirs of the man himself. It's very funny and very Rik, but you definitely shouldn't go into it expecting any insight into him. Ade's is just about as far from that as possible. 😂 It's much more revealing and honest than most autobiographies I've read. I'm glad Ade has started talking about all this recently. A few years ago, I'd never have expected anything like this from him. I hope he's finding it cathartic.
Thanks for the ask! Sorry I don't have much to say yet.
Ahhhhh Ade's releasing an autobiography! This is not a drill, scumbags!
