Job Site Tested

Is the area or job site where you use your tools full of sand or water?  Have you ever drove over your power tool before?  Accidents happen, in fact, last week our concrete contractor left his tools in the sand overnight through a very serious thunderstorm.  The tools were soaked in water and sand.  He rinsed them off and went to work.  Watching that happen inspired us to see what would happen if almost every accident one could have happened to a power tool all happened in one day.  Would the tool survive?

To make it even more interesting, we decided to use a combo kit that one would normally buy on sale.  In Hitachi’s line (soon to be Metabo HPT) this combo kit does not include Hitachi’s most high-end tools.  This will give everyone a great representation of how normal tools will react to torture.  In many ways, it was very surprising to see what a tool can take and what will render it useless.

Combo Kit Downfall

In the case of our Hitachi KC18DBFL2 Combo Kit, we were only given one battery.  In all of our testing, we continued to use that single battery.  That one battery was dunked over and over into the water, buried in sand and sit connected to our tool as it was run over.  If there is a downfall to this kit it is that the kit only includes one battery.

Every Combo Kit seems to have some downfall, but that is made up for in its pricing.  Hitachi includes 3Ah batteries as their compact battery and we feel they perform very well.  Much better than the 2.0Ah batteries others include.  Price seems to drive many combo kits sales and the only way to keep the price down is to keep the pieces in the kit as least expensive as possible.  That makes sense for a manufacturer, but not always for the buyer.

Overall

The goal we set out to prove was that tools can take a serious amount of abuse and keep on working.  In many cases, keep working just like new even if the body of the tool has seen better days.  Water is never a good thing for electronics, but many tools have potted circuit boards and are designed so that small amounts of water will not kill them.  If your tools do get wet, we would always recommend you dry them as soon as possible.  We would never recommend that you allow your batteries to get wet, especially in any type of corrosive liquid.  Batteries can catch fire and do bad things.

Impressive Performance

Testing runtime on a SDS-Plus drill can be a bit of a headache.  Many concrete slabs vary in hardness, so to complete this test we pulled out a few different small rotary hammers and did some drilling.  That allowed us to see the power difference using the same bit.  To our surprise, the Makita XRH06RB outlasted the other drills we had on the job site by a very long time.  The lightweight, feel of quality and vibration control on the bent drill bit we were using was amazing, especially when compared to the other drills we had available.  This small model was also more comfortable to use than the corded model we had out.

We have had these Sub-Compact tools from Makita for well over two weeks and we love them. They are changing the way we think about what unit we grab to complete the task. For instance, at our CNC station, we keep Makita’s 18 volt compact drill driver and impact driver at the ready. They are 18 volt tools that are smaller and lighter than their big brothers. We don’t need the heft at the CNC station but could use those units at a different station. We replaced them with the sub-compact tools. We get a smaller and lighter tool but always have the 18 volt power and performance when we need it.

Assembling projects often requires pilot holes and screws to keep two pieces together. Our typical screw size is 1 1/4″ or 1 5/8″ screw. We are not driving large heavy screws so we don’t need a full size drill. BUT, an 18 volt battery gives us the performance to get our drilling and driving screws much faster. Using Makita Sub-Compact units, we are able to decrease the size and weight of our tool but maintain the power of the 18 volt battery. The smaller package puts less wear and tear on our bodies and we are able to work longer and faster.

Respect the Power

Milwaukee released their new second generation M18 Fuel brushless drills and they are packed with power. Milwaukee’s first generation Fuel drill/driver was no slouch and had some great features.  While there was no issue with the first generation model 2604 and 2603, the second generation model 2704 and 2703 makes Milwaukee king of the hill with 1,200 in lbs of torque.  If you purchase the new model in a kit, you will get the new 5.0Ah XC Li-ion battery packs. Like normal, you can also buy these bare tool.

If you have the older drill/driver, you will not notice much of a change while simply holding and looking at the units.  There are some vent differences, but overall they look and have the same controls.  Once in use, the second generation (Gen 2) really shows that it has almost double the torque of the older models.  Milwaukee also upped the RPM on the Gen 2 model to 2,000 rpm.  That is not quite corded model rpm yet, but still, extremely nice.

Should You Upgrade?

So you have the older model Milwaukee M18 drill/driver and now you see the new model with all this power.  Making the decision on if you should upgrade is not very easy because these are not very cheap tools.  Here is what we can tell you.  In testing, we had little trouble stopping the older model with a 2-1/2″ hole saw in low range while working with pine.  We were leaning into the drill and pushing way too hard for the task, but all in all, we were able to stop the older model.  We could not stop the new model under the same circumstances.

If you use the drill in hammer mode, the extra rpm’s on high were not that much of a difference to notice a large speed increase.  You can tell things are going faster, but the job time of drilling a 1/2″ hole was pretty close.  While it is an advantage, is that enough for one to upgrade?

Driver mode is virtually the same other than the extra power.  I found that I was using the clutch functions more to save myself from stripping Phillips and Robinson screws.  If you used this for driving lags, the power in low was nice, but also much harder on your wrist when not used with the large accessory handle.  I would much prefer to use in impact driver for larger items to save wear and tear on my hands and wrist.

  Well Do You?

In my opinion, there are two reasons that one should upgrade.  First is if you have jobs that require higher amounts of torque than the first generation fuel model offered.  The second reason would be simply that you want to have the most powerful and up to date M18 drill.  Having larger drills, like the Hole Hawg, makes me tend to lean to not upgrading after using the new drill.  That is not because I do not love the new power, I do!  But there has to be some respect for what this power can do to your wrists.  One snag while drilling and that drill can do some damage.  The larger drills are easier to hang on to and provide more leverage.  With that being said, we recommend using the accessory handle on any difficult drilling task.  This drill is powerful.

I think it is great that Milwaukee is continuing to push the limits and design these high power models.  I look forward to more innovation and power in the other lines of tools.
