The BETA Series by Rachel Cohn
There appears to be some sort of rule that YA novels have to be written in a series of three and have to have a dystopian setting.
This series follows that rule but actually contains a unique story. Here's what's happened, two novels in:
BETA is the first novel. In it, we meet Elysia, a type of clone (an "Emergent" in the series vocabulary) created from a dead human (a "First"). As a teenager, she is rare, as most Emergents are created as mature servant/slaves with the key criteria being good looks.Emergents are said to have no souls and do not think for themselves, being controlled by implanted chips.
Elysia is a creature of Demesne, a perfect island paradise for only the world's wealthiest. The rest of the known world was basically destroyed in the Water Wars of the not so distant past, and its inhabitants live in hive like cities in deserts.
Elysia is purchased by the Governor's wife and joins an elite household, with a teenage "brother" Ivan and a "little sister" Liesel. Everyone is thrilled with Elysia as she fulfills the roles of perfect companion and servant. She meets Ivan's friends (her demographic) and all is well until Elysia starts having visions, which she realizes are from the memories of her First. This has to be kept secret, since clones are not conditioned to know anything but their current role and any aberrant behavior would label her a "Defect" and she would be killed. Although, of course, society does not admit that Defects even exist. Emergents have expiration dates, after which they're replaced by fresher models.
The richest family on Demesne are the Fortesquieus. Their beloved son Tahir was in a dreadful accident, treated on the mainland and has returned to Demesne. Elysia realizes that Tahir is also a Beta and they become close when Elysia is "borrowed" by the Fortesquieus, on the pretense that they might also purchase a Beta. It's a huge secret that Tahir is a Beta and it is hoped that Elysia can help him assimilate better back into the family, since Tahir is being taught to behave like his First.
A drug called Ataraxia, although illegal, is taken for sport by bored Demesne teens. It gives the humans a mellow high, but it triggers the souls of Emergents, who realize that they are unwilling slaves. Some are planning an Insurrection. Elysia is walking a thin line, trying to appear submissive and also yearning to learn more about the Insurrection. She's also in love with Tahir and trying to avoid Alexander, who's been sent from the mainland on behalf of the Replicant Rights Commission. Triggered by sporadic memories, Elysia is aware that her First had a relationship with Alex.
Tahir and Elysia become aware that they have expiration dates and plan an escape. Things come to a head after Tahir is revealed as a Beta. His parent whisk him away before there are any consequences but when Elysia is revealed as a defect, Ivan violates her. She kills him in retaliation and escapes with Alex to an island outside the protected sphere of Demesne.
There, Elysia is stunned to meet her First, Zhara, who is still human, clearly not dead.
Which brings us to EMERGENT, the second volume. The chapters are narrated separately by Zhara and Elysia. The island is the stronghold of Emergents who are preparing to assault Demesne. Elysia is pregnant, something that has never before happend to an Emergent, and looked to as a spiritual leader. Zhara still has feelings for Alex and is upset that Alex has bonded with Elysia.
This planned Emergent guerilla action does not turn out well.
But you'll have to read the rest of the book to find out why. I can reveal that when the book ends, Elysia and Zhara have a new respect for each other and that neither has given up on the idea that Emergents are not soulless, second class citizens.

They always tell me about my squiggly lines, I use them in all quick sketches regardless the subject. Ink has always been my favorite medium and when I discovered the combination of Stillman and Birn Paper, Lamy pens and Noodler’s ink I felt that from then on I could just draw anything and forget about struggling with…

Trial and Error
It all started when I messed up this watercolor
I made a sketch of the drawing, which became more simplified
I used my carved willow sticks to apply ink in simplified strokes to get the essence of the sketch
Then I applied colors
At the end the character was different so I don’t know which I like best but I think the black and white :)
