Beta Tester Applications – Open

I’m opening applications for beta testers for Crown of Exile.

If you’re interested in early access, helping shape the final version, and giving feedback on the story, choices, or gameplay—this is your chance!

This round of testing will focus on the final chapter. I'm specifically looking for feedback on the various paths and choices available for the main battle of Chapter 12.

Requirements:

You must be 18 or older; and

Be able to communicate in and understand English.

Generative AI is not a free resource. It costs billions of dollars and massive amounts of energy. The objective of the people financing generative AI is and has always been to replace human workers and maximize profits. Right now you are their free beta testers. Your greatest service to them is normalizing this technology. They want us dependent on this technology. That's why they're making it a part of just about everything. They want you using their image generation software and talking to their chat bots until you can't think of living without some form of generative AI tech.

Devlog 2026-02-13 (Calling all Beta Testers!)

Skipping over the personal stuff to get to the exciting stuff!

We’re ready to start accepting Beta Testers for Episode 4 - part 3, our next big content launch that progresses the plot. If you are interested in Beta Testing for us, please fill in this form to be considered!

We’ll be doing things a bit differently this time. The new content will launch for patrons first, probably at the end of this month, depending on Beta Tester feedback. If all goes according to plan, we’ll also have another cross-promotion with a very cool indie studio. We’re just still in the process of getting everything in order, and things might still fall through. We want the cross-promotion to run a bit longer than previous ones, and then we’ll do a full public release, probably at the end of March.

I’m excited for the new content. We’ve tried a lot of new things this time around, and depending on your feedback, we might start having more ‘dungeon crawl’ side missions like the one featured in the main story of the upcoming content. This also marks the first time you are able to make a choice(s) that could lead to your death, upping the stakes significantly.

I’m also a bit concerned about the new content. It’s quite heavy with a lot of tension, and most of it can be described as a long ‘dungeon crawl’ as you navigate through the narrative of the mission at hand. My concern is that it might be a total miss. But I feel that way about each major release.

You’d think, after doing this for 5 years, it’s something I should’ve overcome by now.

I’ve teased some major spoilers on the Discord server, (Off topic, we are considering migrating away from Discord after the new forced adult verification system was announced, we’re currently testing Stoat as an alternative, so if you have strong opinions, please reach out here or on Discord DM to let me know!), and I don’t want to spoil too much of the upcoming gasp moments, so no screenshots for this devlog, sorry.

After this, we’re planning one more major release cycle for Episode 4 before it wraps up, and then another one, possibly two more episodes, before wrapping up the season.

We’ve been working on some cool new fluff scenes that are heavily shaped by your previous choices for your Mah’Abeuh and the LI’s, including a system where you and your LI/Bestie/Rival(?) can ‘text’ each other at night while in bed. These won’t be in the current content release. I think.

I’ve also started reaching out to some of our amazing Patrons. If I still owe you a portrait, an outfit, or a scene, drop me a DM. If you don’t, I’ll get around to reaching out to you if I haven’t yet.

The biggest delay on the outfit system is, believe it or not, the UI. We’ll shift our attention to it once the current release is out there. In the meantime, we have built up quite a lovely collection of alternative outfits thanks to our Captain and Admiral patrons.

Our finance people have been complaining to me about the game being free-to-play. I want to assure everyone that the conversation concluded that we promised that season one of the game would remain free, and we’re not breaking that promise. The good news is that a lot of non-patrons have been very vocal about getting access to the adult content as a once-off payment, like a DLC, and for the first time, this is something that we’re now considering as a team. My stance is that if you have been contributing to help us develop the content, you will be receiving the content without having to pay for it again. Another bit of good news is that, by adding adult content as DLCs, we can revisit the possibility of adding real CG scenes and even (gasp) partial voice acting, although at almost 250K words of content, the last one is more a wish than a possibility. Still. Never say never.

Our finance team has also been looking into the possibility of securing external funding for the project. Kickstarter was never an option because we're based in South Africa, but we’ve identified some grants that might be a perfect fit for a small but established studio like ours. That said, if you come across any of these opportunities, please send them along. Getting funded will let us hire more team members (and give our existing ones a raise), which will speed up development cycles. Regardless of whether we achieve this or not, we are still committed to our promise of trying for monthly(ish) releases for patrons.
