Thirty years of poetic work by Bureau Betak has reinvented the rules of the catwalk show, creating the quick-fire spectacular we know today.
my lgbtq+ experience
I’ve given this some thought in the past but I’ve never gotten in-depth with myself or others. I grew up in a religious household- conservative and shielding. I had no proper knowledge of anything ‘good’ or ‘bad’ except that there was a God who loved me and everyone in the world and I was pretty okay with that.
When I was 10/11 or so my friends started having crushes on boys. I didn’t really understand it but I was like “sure, why not, it’s normal” and I named a random boy to ‘crush on’ so I wouldn’t be the odd one out. Strangely enough I sort of also started noticing girls... like, girls on the media. I thought that was normal, lol (I was wrong.)
It wasn’t till I was 13 that I started properly having ‘crushes’ and it was around that time that I started reading fan fiction (yes, fan fiction.) They consisted entirely of straight couples and from what I understood, that was all that the world had to offer... then, there was a ‘side couple’. Someone just came out to their best friend and I was in just as much shock as the main character. Till this point I hadn’t known LGBT people existed.
Funnily enough, one of my friend’s came out to me and I responded with “cool, here’s a fan fiction I read that also has a gay person- you should read it!” (I'm embarrassed for my 13-year-old-self now but back then I was mostly determined to show that I accepted them.)
LGBTQ+ presence wasn’t a thing back then so everything I knew at that point was that the main character accepted their gay friend wholly and loved them still... I hadn’t gotten the ‘gay is bad’ spiel until much later and by that point I had a clear view on LGBTQ+ and I accepted that it very well could be a part of me and I’d be totally cool with it.
I guess it’s really the internet I should be thanking for this concise view on LGBTQ+ when there was a time I had no idea it existed. It’s also because of the internet that I accepted myself as LGBT and I knew enough that there was a world outside of lil old Bethel, Alaska.
My hope for the future is that I’ll become an openly LGBTQ+ person in my community because god knows I needed someone back then and that other young folks will understand that being LGBT isn’t bad. That they have someone who has their backs and that same someone wants to help create change.
It’s a big hope. Big dreams. But I’ve never been someone who aimed for something small.
I give up on vid titles lol they're too much work and I never know what to call them aha I RAN OUT OF THINGS TO TALK ABOUT (not really) BUT STILL find me @: ...
