Disney Animation has just released Short Circuit, a series of 14 animated shorts, on Disney+. Among these shorts is “Just a Thought,” directed by Brian Menz. I watched the short and noticed something... oddly familiar...

The story is about a boy named Ollie trying to repress his romantic feelings for his classmate, which are personified as a living thought bubble that keeps trying to chase the girl down.

Hm... where have we heard that before...?

Ah, yes, 2017’s “In a Heartbeat,” a Kickstarter-backed short film by Ringling College of Art and Design graduates Esteban Bravo and Beth David; the story of a boy named Sherwin trying to repress his romantic feelings for his classmate, Johnathan, which are personified by a cartoony heart literally bursting out of his chest and—oh. Ohhhhhh.

“Just a Thought” is a heterosexual bootleg of the novel, visionary “In a Heartbeat,” and someone’s gotta call Disney out on this. There is, of course, the slight chance that this is all just a coincidence, and Menz DIDN’T blatantly rip off IaH, but the similarities, from the plot to the character proportions and setting, are just too much to leave unnoticed.
