Starting in the 17th century, French women were gathered and sent to colonies to become wives to the colonists, the most famous of which being the Casket Girls of New Orleans. These women, deemed “pure” by the church, were usually orphans sent to become the “mothers” of New Orleans, but they often wound up in danger or in unwanted marriages. They earned their name from their casket-shaped suitcases, which spurred the rumors that these young women were actually vampires, supernatural creatures of unimaginable power.
