Shadow
Shadow [trailer]
Life and intrigue in an ancient Chinese court.
Gorgeous to look at, a feast for the eyes.
Towards the end, the "no wounding is serious enough to stop anyone" gets a bit Monty Pythonesque. And the revelations who fooled whom are happening rather fast. But that's not really a problem.

Starting in the 17th century, French women were gathered and sent to colonies to become wives to the colonists, the most famous of which being the Casket Girls of New Orleans. These women, deemed “pure” by the church, were usually orphans sent to become the “mothers” of New Orleans, but they often wound up in danger or in unwanted marriages. They earned their name from their casket-shaped suitcases, which spurred the rumors that these young women were actually vampires, supernatural creatures of unimaginable power.
In the modern day United States, girls are stolen away from their families, or taken advantage of for their runaway status, and shipped to New York to have latent magical abilities siphoned out of them to fuel an ancient war. But there are still good people in the world, and one of them, Minako Aino, isn’t going to let any of the new sailor soldiers die on her watch.
