Nathalie Miranda
Nathalie Miranda is a full-fledged, soul belter, power-house vocalist with a 4octave range. Notable for her unique, soulful voice, and high energy performances, this artist is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Hot on the heels of her recent release ‘Poltergeist’ earlier this year, her new single ‘Catch-22’ is out now. This is a totally different sound for Nathalie, and one that she feels reflects her love of soul and blues music, while still being, without doubt, a relatable, catchy, pop song. Nathalie elaborates further: "I wanted to create a song that reflected by love for Blues and Soul, while still being a pop track. I came up with the melody and the initial lyric one day during lockdown, and it really inspired me to create this retro sound, while still being a relatable topic. The girl in the song is trying to work out whether or not she should listen to her heart or her head; she knows that her boyfriend has hurt her, but the problem is that she just can’t live without him...which is therefore a catch-22! Infact, I didn’t have a title for the song until a few weeks before I shot the video! Musically, I wanted it to sound huge and quite sparse at the same time, which I think my producer and co-writer, Simon, did a great job creating in our make-shift home studio! We triple tracked most of the harmonies and backing vocals to give it that massive sound that I had envisioned. Time-consuming but definitely worth it!The inspiration for the video was a Bond theme. I wanted something very simple, and obviously it had to be a Covid-friendly video shoot with social distancing! So it’s all about suggestion in the video, and the frustration thatthe protagonist is feeling." Listen below.

Elin Bellander
‘Good on My Own’ is a vibrant and melodic contemporary pop song about self-love and fully embracing your independence. Getting out of a long term and highly co-dependent relationship, Swedish pop singer-songwriter Elin Bellander found herself in the midst of a new-found freedom which inspired her latest single. Produced by NYC based artist/songwriter/producer Skyler Cocco, the two worked on the track only through social media due to the pandemic keeping them from working together in person. The state of the world right now can be daunting, but these two still managed to make magic happen, just like Elin says “It was super cool to connect with a complete stranger on the other side of the Atlantic and still manage to find a vibe together as creatives solely through digital platforms. During these trying times it’s nice to see that it’s still possible to form new creative connections and create something positive, and Ibelieve we did just that.’’ Heavily influencedby artists such as Julia Michaels, Lennon Stella, SHY Martin & FLETCHER, this is a pop song with something to say. It’s got deeper meaningful lyricalcontentabout losing yourself in a relationship and then getting out of it on the other end and finding happiness.“Ineed to learn how to be my own best friend and writing this song is one step closer to getting there”. Bethia
Reading’s own Bethia, debuts brand new single ‘Meantime’. An intimate love song about the journey to normality at the end of a break up, ‘Meantime’ is a sweet blend of pop melodies & RnB arrangement; making this stunning debut more than just a heartbreak anthem. Detailing the hardship of finding yourself once more, this end of summer slow jam makes for the perfect segue into cuffing season. Speaking on her inspiration for the song, and the realities of lost love Bethia says, “’Meantime’ revolves around a particular post break-up feeling, even though you don’t have the comfort of them with you physically, you continue to think about them and dwell on the good memories you created together.” Produced by SHOR & Mört ‘Meantime’ strikes the perfect balance. Showing off her skyhigh range, ‘Meantime’ marks the start of what promises to be an authentic career for this 22 year old singer-songwriter.

Elphi
'Play Pretend’ is a single born from lockdown. Produced by the head of Hyperpop Records, Shady Monk, Elphi's single brings together classic pop elements with darker electronic sounds creating an overall explosive dance track that has a melancholic ring to it. As a female DJ Elphi has spoken of how difficult the industry is to be heard in as a woman, but that should not put young girls off. She wanted to include electronic tropes in her music to make them easily 'mixable' in a set. Listen below.

“A Pop Princesses CD” - where it all began for the R&B style, Soul Pop artist, Bethia. Dancing around her living room as just a child, matured into strutting on stage, full of sexy, powerful passion.
Bethia began her music career at the age of just 11, writing simple piano songs in her spare time. Finding the lyrical process “so exciting’, it allowed her “write down how [she] was feeling and translate it into something creative” whilst doing her favourite thing- singing.
she found huge inspiration from many artist but was particularly impressed with the artist ‘Tori Kelly’, finding it “so amazing” the way she could captivate an audience with just a guitar and a vocal performance. This childhood infatuation turned into a direct inspiration to create personal and relatable lyrics, expressing that she wants people to “feel as though they can link them to a particular time in their life”.
With emotional lyrics such as “tears run down my dress, but I can’t take it off ‘cause you said you like this one best” from her single ‘Nothing’ (a personal favourite of mine), I think it’s safe to say Bethia’s heart flinching lyrics achieved what they set out to do.
The punchy and powerful artist offers a huge feminine confidence boost through both her lyrics and performance, as can be felt through her latest release of “Still Waters” in August.
The dynamic of the ACM artist, Bethia and her backing band has changed quite dramatically over the past year or so. Beginning her performing career as just a vocalist with a guitarist and cajon player, she has transformed into a full backing band with guitar; bass; drums; keyboard and backing vocals.
Being able to see the transformation of both the music and stage atmosphere has been such a pleasure, agreed by Bethia - “The band have been such an incredible part of my artistic journey”.
The combination of an incredibly talented lyricist and song-writer with the inventive licks and fills of the band, have “really [brought Bethia’s] songs to life in a live setting” and allowed for a whole new and complimentary style to come to Bethia. The band not only offer song-writing support but I would personally say they have given Bethia the shot of confidence she deserves.
There’s lots of exciting movement from Bethia to look forward to in the next few months, including two new singles expecting to be released in December and January.
New material is being worked on that is “quite different” from the previous released, involving a heavier production and veering more towards an electronic R&B stye, with Bethia stating “my sound will be changing quite a lot however I think it is an exciting change and something that will benefit my journey as an artist”.
Follow Bethia on Facebook and Instagram for all updates, and whatever is next to come, know it’s going to be great!

Written by Bethia So our MA final project time is upon us and I have been fortunate enough to have been loaned three beautiful Indian miniature paintings from the Royal Asiatic Society from the early 1800s. Although their colours are surprising brilliant they are in danger of loosing much of the image through flaking and cracking pigment. The challenges of working with these body colour pigments is fascinating and I can’t wait to get started….

Last June the works of art on paper pathway had the wonderful fortune to do a lining workshop at the V&A museum. We each lined a large theatre poster with the traditional Chinese methods onto Japanese paper.
Written by Bethia Today I am retouching this flaking poster painting with gouache. I consolidated with gelatine and funori in a nebuliser. There are three main colours present with shading. I have chosen to retouch with three set colours that are a slightly different so that you can clearly see the retouched areas without detracting me from the overall look.
