Can we just take a minute to appreciate Team’s parents? Not only his mother, but his father too. So often with these types of story narratives - especially when the character that’s suffering with the PTSD/survivors guilt/anxiety is a male - the father tends to pull the ‘man up, don’t be a wuss, get over it’ toxic masculinity bullshit card. Instead we have Team’s dad playfully tease him, cook his favourite foods, not throw a fit because of Team’s mom ‘babying’ him, etc. They let their 18 year old son crawl into bed with them and stay there! They playfully decide to be a family of cows because their calf still needs them in the field, they care for him and hug him between them. Do you know how important that is to see!? How amazing that is!? As a person who went through trauma very similar to Team, I can say seeing parents treat a character like that, like he’s allowed to be scared and traumatized without judgment only understanding and loving words, it’s so refreshing. I admit, I had to stop the show a couple times to deal with my own sobs, but it was still so good to see. Less toxic families in my media, please and thank you!
Win: What’s your blood type?
Team: How would I know?
Win: How would you not?!
Team: Who am I, Karl Landsteiner, discoverer of blood groups?
Win: You don’t know your own blood type, BUT YOU KNOW WHO DISCOVERED THEM!?
Thoughts on Hemp Rope novel and Between Us pt1 (spoilers for both)
Arguably the largest alteration between the drama and the novel is Team’s family dynamic/structure.
For clarification, in the novel Team’s parents died in an accident when he was about 5 - his father had no living family and it seemed like Team would end up in the system except his cousin Ton begged his parents (Team’s aunt and uncle) to take him in. Whereas in the show, Team’s parents have both survived.
Why was this changed, I think in part it was done for simplicities sake. Separating the two families makes the overall structure easier to comprehend and lessens the nuance. However, it really changes (and almost lessens) the nature of Team’s grief and guilt.
Throughout the novel leading up to Team revealing everything to Win we get bits and pieces of Team’s trauma; his internal admission he can’t look his parents in the eye, his reoccurring flashbacks, and of course his nightmares. He also admits that he feels like he’s taken his parents and replaced Ton’s entire existence. His guilt is complex - he believes he killed his brother, his cousin, his savior AND then took over that person’s entire life.
By separating the families in the show it also adds a degree of separation from the traumatic event. When Team goes home, yes his mom’s like “visit Ton’s grave”
But in the novel it’s go say hello to your brother, who’s room hasn’t been touched since the day he died minus the addition of trophies (which I think Team puts there). He also doesn’t visit his parents in the book, actively avoiding it until after he’s started therapy.
No but the key chain… 🥺 It’s WINNIE the Pooh! 🤧🤧🤧
Remember everyone, consent is important
I would like to order one episode 5 please :)
Oh, how much I have missed you, I'm-too-bored-to-even-exist Team.
