mattheo was a fan of anything that could get him out of the house, and too a fan of halloween. though mattheo had now reached being in korea for two years, he still didn’t have a lot of friends, mostly when he left his apartment, it was for work or to visit his grandmother. mattheo had always been used to friendships that would end as quickly as they begun, mattheo had met a lot of people in korea, but it was rare there ever was a second meeting. but mattheo was a guy who loved being around other people, he was a guy that much preferred being outside of his apartment than in it. so this event seemed amazing, and it was going on for long, and mattheo knew he’d visit as often as possible.
random play dance was something mattheo enjoyed, though he was still stuck with two left feet, it’d get better hopefully, it needed to be if he wanted to become an idol. for today he’s alone, went to the event with nobody else, he listens carefully if the next song is one he knows, and he does. it’s bite me, a choreography for two which mattheo learned alone. he’s quick to step into the circle, some people seem like they’ve already found a partner, he spots someone who stands alone like him “which part of the dance did you learn?” he’s quick to ask, before the chorus actually comes on.

matt was happy to get out of his apartment, do something else than work and visiting his grandmother. as much as he loved his grandmother (and her cat), and as much as loved his colleagues and students, sometimes he wanted to hang out with people his own age. so when mattheo heard of the halloween market, he made sure to find space in his calendar for it, trying to join as often as he could. for today he’d dragged along stevie, a friend of his, and the two were joining a karaoke event.
“i know i came to korea to become a singer and all, but don’t expect too much from me” mattheo had improved greatly in his singing, but had he become the best? far from it still. “do you wanna choose the song? oh! can we do a duet, that’d be fun, i don’t think i’ve heard you sing before?”.
matt living alone and still not being dead is pretty amazing. of course his grandmother still takes care of him though his days of living with her are over, almost whenever he visits her she brings food for him to take home. it’s not like matt is a complete idiot unable to take care of himself, it’s more like he does dumb stuff and you raise an eyebrow at him, get confused how his mind words. like saving cats from trees just to get stuck in the tree himself, somehow fall into a lake, and of course, believing he can dye his hair with… gatorade.
he looks at the gatorade in his hand before lifting his head to look at stevie, harshly he places the gatorade on the table before speaking “do you think i can dye my hair blue with this” he looks up, trying to get a glimpse of his blonde bangs. “my hair is already blonde, so it should be easy to dye, yeah?”, “and it makes sense, spilling blue gatorade on a white shirt makes it blue, so it should make my hair blue yeah? science, or something”...
"i love gifting things to people, but my brother makes it so tough."
with that, jueun let out a frustrated sigh as she looked at some of the booths surrounding them at the market. she loved these sort of holiday markets because they were filled with creative trinkets and inspirational ornaments that would look great on her instagram feed as well.
"everytime i get him something, his response is so lukewarm! it really ruins all the fun." she lets out another huff of breath before picking up a santa clause ornament. again, it was absolutely adorable, but she doubts her brother will be a fan. "do you think i should just gift him cash or something?" she snorts at the idea. while she didn't think it was a bad idea, it just didn't feel like her. jueun was all about customized, well thought-out gifts.
food was something mattheo had become very fond of, whether it was his grandmother’s or just simply the food from seven-eleven. matt found himself snacking a lot, and he was happy to cook with his grandmother or simply just eat her food. food brought him together with other people, whether it was cooking together, eating together or recommending other’s your favourite snacks.
when matt heard of the christmas market, he knew he would go, and likely force friends to come along. daeho was someone who went to the seven-eleven mattheo worked at, over time they’d become friends, and now they were going to the christmas market together. “there’s so many food stalls…” mattheo looks around “at the end of today we’ll be poor and our tummies full” he chuckles.
mattheo’s dad had always been supportive of mattheo, no matter what. high grade on his homework, congrats! he just manages to pass? congrats! he was supportive, no matter the result, he’d always made sure to make mattheo feel loved, feel worth it. but no matter how supportive his dad was, mattheo could feel it, the mixed feelings when he decided to move to korea to become an idol. there was a smile on mattheo’s dad lips when he told him of his plans, there was always a smile on his dad’s lips, but that one felt different, and mattheo couldn’t quite figure out why. it’d for a long while been just them, mattheo didn’t have many friends, and no best friends, and the same for his dad, they were dependent on each other. mattheo wondered, when he left for korea, would his dad feel more lonely, or would he finally have time to go out and make friends?
they called often, of course they did, they were still each other’s best friends, and would continue to be forever. it was difficult finding time for it, mostly because of the different timezones, but the two always managed to make time for it.
it rings, mattheo is the one to call, unannounced today, but he misses his dad, doesn’t have time to agree upon a time, if his dad doesn't answer, they can find a time, but for now, he just hopes his dad has time though it’s not planned.
“mattheo!” there’s a smile on his dad’s lips, it’s a facetime, mattheo prefers regular calls, but his dad says he misses his face too much for regular calls, so it always ends up being facetime. “you called unannounced, did anything good happen?” mattheo has a habit of calling unannounced whenever he’s very happy or excited about something, but he shakes his head “nothing particularly good, i just missed you. i applied to a bunch of companies again, still didn’t make it though”. “awe, i’m sorry to hear that, but i know you’ll get there, before i know it, i’ll have a world famous son!” “kpop still isn’t that popular, i’ll have to become the next bts or twice for that to happen” “you’ll become bigger than that!” “you’re setting too high expectations dad, i have to become a trainee first y’know! i will say though, grandma says i look less awkward when i sing, i think i’ve finally figured out that presence thing you talked about!” “and dance?” “still not the best, but i’ll get there, i’m sure i will!”. “can i hear about your day, dad?”.
“well, i’m still a teacher, like always, i was a substitute for an english class today, i should’ve had you with me now that you teach english!” “not sure if that would’ve helped, i teach like six years old, you’re a high school teacher!” “ah you might be right, but you’ve been an english teacher so long, i think you’ve become better at me”. “i’ve spoken english since birth, so would make sense i’m better than you at english, just like you’re better than me at korean”, “don’t think that’ll hold long though, i used to speak only korean with you, and now when we chat we speak english” “ah but i just miss speaking english!” “i know, i know, and i don’t mind speaking english, but my korean is becoming rusty i think”, “call grandma, she only speaks korean” “and has grandma learned how to call yet?” “not unless i’m with her…” “exactly!” and a laugh escapes both of their lips.
“do you have time for a long call today?” his dad asks, “you can talk for a while? usually when i call out of nowhere you don’t have time”, “i’m ordering food today, thought i could send you money and you order food too, and then we talk while eating takeout, how does that sound?”, “i’m an adult and live in another continent and yet you manage to continue spoiling me”, “you deserve it”, and so, the talk continues for a while.
another sunday, another convenience store shift. sometimes, these days, it's actually a nice break from training. it's not like she wishes she didn't have to train; it's just nice to have a little break from routine once a week. and also to make more than $30 a week. that also helps.
the convenience store usually isn't very busy, so she gets away with sitting behind the counter and playing her nintendo switch while no one is looking half the time. of course, she has to check customers out, which is her least favorite part, but restocking the shelves isn't too bad either. it still feels a little embarrassing for a future kpop idol to work in a place like this, but nayoung has learned to suck up her pride a little more in recent times. it is what it is.
now, she absentmindedly hangs out behind the counter. someone is in the store, so she doesn't want to play her switch and look like a lazy employee. she can't really afford to lose this job, after all, so she just inspects her newly painted nails, then looks up, observing the customer from time to time.
eventually, her eyebrows furrow together, because he's acting a little strange. maybe it's nayoung, a snake, being able to detect a fellow snake, but she feels like something isn't right. she grabs some bags of chips that she knows need to be restocked anyway as an excuse, then heads into the aisle the strange man currently occupies.
"what are you doing?" she asks him, tone already indicating her suspicion and unamusement.
