@beyondtheglasswall is finally meeting their wife again.
Someone she knew was here. Somehow, Ion understood this. Perhaps it was the prickly feeling she had gotten earlier, that someone had been watching her. Perhaps it was that small urge to look back, to search the city for the one that had been watching her.
The gaze had been Oversight. It had to have been.
When she had time to sit down and actually access her own Oversight (after a pause of wondering whether she could or not), the sight that met her eyes shocked her. Not only were multiple areas of the city around her completely totaled, but there were fights occurring all throughout the area. Including the island above.
Actually, the fight she happened to find while combing the area... Ion now knew who the gaze had been from. One of them, at least.
It was dusty. Visibility was low, but going beyond the Third level of Oversight when she didn’t know what was going on would only exhaust her needlessly. But from what she could see....
“Prim!?” The bright shock of pink hair and orange clothing weaving among the dust was very familiar, and she didn’t have to look any closer to identify her at first glance. The boy she seemed to be up against wasn’t familiar to her in any way, but whether or not he was the enemy seemed unclear.
Even so, they seemed odd. Like something.. Was off. Was it Prim? Was it the boy? Ion opened her eyes, cutting off the Oversight and her view of the fight. She needed to get up there, to get involved in a way she probably shouldn’t.
It was a long way to the island, and getting there wasn’t easy. Of the several minutes it took her to get to the nearest way up to the island above, most of those were dedicated to her running for her life away from various enemies roaming the streets. Also.... She could have sworn she saw the machines from the Soreil, in all their shiny and interesting glory mixed in the rabble that tried to deny her way forwards. Maybe she saw wrong?
Getting in the elevator up, she bent over to catch her breath, breathing hard as she tried to get a look at what Prim was doing now. Perhaps it was the climax of their battle, the ending. But she saw it.
Prim fell. Not because she was pushed. Not for the lack of the boy trying to drag her back up from over the side. Because she let go of the boy’s hand, Prim fell.
Ion did not want to see it. She would not allow herself to watch the girl’s final impact on the surface of the island below. Opening her eyes and ignoring the tears starting to gather in her eyes as her heart screamed at herself for not getting there fast enough, she waited out the rest of her ride on the elevator to the top. She would get the answers she was lacking once she talked to the boy.
“.... Huh? Hu, wh-what-?” Upon reaching the actual area of the fight, what she saw first and foremost caused Ion’s mind to stutter, then completely go blank. In the middle of the field, looking fairly dusty, was.... Earthes. It was even the Mk. II version, the one she had made with all her heart with the Seven after refusing to believe her beloved was gone.
“......?”
..... He hadn’t moved. It had been a minute or so since her mind went offline, but the robot hadn’t moved at all in the time she had been blankly staring at him. Was it because...? She didn’t want to finish that thought. Perhaps he just wasn’t at his terminal.
It took a great amount of effort to push back the overwhelming urge to go plaster herself to the robot’s side until it came back online, but she was rather used to denying that feeling from her time on the Soreil. Its fine, if he was here then that meant that she could talk to him again, once he picked up his terminal.
In fact, his presence alone was enough to cause the uneasy feeling she had at the back of her mind to ease. If he was here, then perhaps she didn’t have to worry as much as she was when she had been ignorant of his existence.
“...? Ah!” She remembered what she had come up here for, quickly looking around the area for the boy who had been fighting Prim. He had suffered a few wounds from the glance she had seen when tuning back in, so it was better for her to get to him quickly to help. (A little late for that now, though..)
Ion found him, quickly moving to his side and kneeling down next to his head. She leaned over to assess if he was still awake, her hair falling with the movement and framing her face.
“A-are you awake? Can you hear my voice?” She gingerly, with slow and careful movements, lifted his head off the ground and onto her lap. It wouldn’t do for him to drown in his own blood, and she didn’t have any pillows or other soft surfaces to offer him.
... He could have been the bad guy in this situation. He could have, but Ion refused to believe so.
an effortless smile follows her words, natural in every sense of the word. were it anyone else, it would probably fool them. they’d see it and listen to her. they wouldn’t question it and simply let the matter go, believing that she was indeed okay and so was everything else. part of her hopes he would buy it, but she also knows better. it can only fool someone who doesn’t know the act and she prays he doesn’t because then she’ll falter. and she can’t do that.
she can’t falter. not here, not there, not anywhere. she already did once, and what happened? the worst thing imaginable. faltering could not happen is what she has told herself time and time again. any fear, any pain or sorrow had to be reeled back in and kept under a brave face-- a convincing smile and a pep in her voice that she can hardly conjure up anymore. there were people who counted on her. who needed her at her best. what happened in Yagya Moscow CAN’T happen again. she won’t allow it. so Takuya’s question earns a casual shrug and a smile, but the light doesn’t reach her eyes. everything is still so fresh and fragile underneath it, but she’s always been good at bouncing back. at pushing everything else aside to do what needed to be done.
even if that meant swallowing her own grief and turning it into bravery.
💛 💜 ❤️ || perhaps it is a terrible idea for her to be here. the red light district. she's not idiotic, not a naive BABE swaddled within a down blanket. the status of the location is understood, if NOT familiar to her personally. though, through all of that, there is one thing about cotes' offerings that IS familiar. she scratches a black cat behind one ear. the creature meows, bright and clear and very open to her. i am bored, the feline says, there is usually someone who plays with me. if this city is anything like the other one, this animal and all the others nearby may end up having to wait a very long time.
she pouts. lips thin. IRRITATING.
at least the company is appreciated.
alas, the sounds of human footsteps alert her to another's presence. spine pulling straight, CURIOUS, she is observant enough to denote the source of those steps. a violet brow raises, lashes fluttering. satori's pink lips exhale a sigh. ❝i do hope that you intend to give these POOR creatures some attention. look at how sad and lonely they are. you should be ashamed of yourself.❞ she's joking, mostly, but the SUBTLE edge in her voice is a warning. i do not trust barefaced violence against these animals. nor will i stand for neglect. still, perhaps she was a LITTLE rude. so she speaks again, more OBVIOUS in her jesting nature. ❝you look a bit too young to be crawling about here. you like cats, don't you?❞
Falling back into routine is easiest part of coming back. Roman knows Fibonacchi like the back of his hand, and Archimedes remains the best place to get something to eat throughout the day. Golden has those pathways and nooks to hide away in when things get too much, or the urge to disappear takes him.
As for Cotes? The cats, obviously. Not to mention everything else, but definitely the cats. And it seems he’s not the only way to appreciate them, though he can scarcely recall seeing this fellow around the area. Then again, it has been a while. “These little guys roped you in to be their personal feeder too, eh?”
“By chance have you seen a tabby around here? A little small, with a clipped ear? She was my favourite but I haven’t been able to find her just yet. Unless she disappeared when I did... No no, that can’t be it! Kitty! Romani’s back with fish!”
🙊 : what would my MUSE say their biggest flaw is ?
she would probably say hers is that she can’t actually save anyone.
think about it. she tried to save penny, and on top of having to live with the knowledge that she was the only one who knew both pyrrha’s semblance and penny’s robot status, she was too late to do so --- because she lacked the strength without her weapon to overpower mercury. she tried to help pyrrha out with weiss’ help, using her own strategy --- a recycled strategy from their first day as partners --- and was literally a few seconds too late.
although yang and jaune weren’t in mortal danger, the fact that she was of zero help to them emotionally after beacon compounded this.
when she thought jaune’s life was in danger, her eyes activated on their own and she was promptly knocked out from behind --- an oversight thanks to her own panic. he survived, but because she was knocked out, she couldn’t do anything to save weiss --- who was critically wounded. weiss, her partner, who literally would’ve died without jaune’s semblance.
when they were down in the basement with the apathy closing around them, she was able to save blake’s life --- but that was a little out of her control as well. the first activation was instinctive; the second was with maria’s help, but it still gave her some belief that her eyes could be controlled in time.
and then she fought the giant sea grimm. not only did her eyes nearly not work entirely due to an oncoming panic attack, but when they did work, it wasn’t enough to be rid of it entirely --- only enough to freeze it for a bit. once again, she can’t quite measure up. they left. when she was in mantle, whenever she tried to use her eyes, they wouldn’t work properly. when she was in front of salem, they worked entirely too much --- and again, without her input. when she fought harriet, she definitely wore her down and overpowered her, but ultimately won with weiss’ help. when cinder showed up, her eyes were enough to scare her off --- but she wasn’t fast enough to help with fria, and she wasn’t fast enough to give penny and winter some relief. she wasn’t fast enough to protect penny from the burden that comes with maidenhood, a burden she’s only familiar with through the lens of pyrrha --- so... not a great start.
this is, in ruby’s eyes, her biggest flaw. without her weapon, she feels useless --- although training with oscar/ozpin/ace ops certainly helped that. when she’s without her team or her friends, she feels useless --- because her strategies hinge on their strengths, and her successes are tied almost completely to them. the one thing she has ( in her mind ) to call her own aside from crescent rose --- her eyes --- aren’t her own at all; they’re forever linked with her mother, who as far as ruby knows was an absolute powerhouse. not only can she not control them effectively ( although the finale episode seems to be pointing towards semi-mastery ), but even if she could, not even her mother’s prowess was enough against salem. so... perhaps due to what i think is her greatest flaw, which is her lack of identity, her perceived greatest flaw is that she’s next to nothing on her own --- and as a result, continually fails in doing what she wants to do the most. saving the people that matter to her. being someone they can rely on.
Now, she knows that he might not believe the very important reason she’s texting him at 2am is very important at all, but she... Kanon needs to know.
