Here I am at the Wheeling Sleep-Out, with this cardboard Guggenheim museum I built with my friend Mel Jeffcoat! The both of us are representing Beyond the Rainbow, a local LGBTQ Advocacy group, participating in the Wheeling Sleep-Out to shine a light on homeless in the LGBTQ community. The Wheeling Sleep-Out benefits Youth Services Systems, which is a Wheeling, WV non-profit working to solve the problem of youth homelessness. For #flashbackfriday I thought my FIRST ever Rainbow girl would be perfect to revisit. 🌈 • I’ll be dropping signed prints of her and a few other of my works tomorrow on my Shop thecamillastore.etsy.com at noonPST 🕛 I hope you can snap her up since there are only a handful! • 💝“Beyond the Rainbow” means so much to me. I created her at a time when I didn’t know if I was going to continue to paint. It took amazing artist @taramcpherson giving me the chance to paint whatever my heart desired, when I exhibited at her gallery so many years ago. I hadn’t allowed myself to step outside the creative box that I put myself into back then. People knew me for my paintings of animals and big-eyed girls so that’s what I created for years. There was pressure from others for me to continue in that direction and not deviate. I began to feel disheartened. 😔 All I could see in my heart were these whimsical rainbow girls that I desperately wanted to paint. 🎨 So when Tara gave me the chance to exhibit and paint whatever I wanted I took a leap of faith! It was so scary to display art that was NOTHING like I’d done before. I was gambling with my career. What if people didn’t like my new art? But I couldn’t keep denying the creativity that begged to be free. If I couldn’t paint what I wanted what was the point of painting at all? 😣 To this day I think my show Niji Bambini with @hikarishimoda is my most pivotal one. 💘 I know life has many twists and turns and not everything I’ve done was successful but I TRIED. • As the great Wayne Gretzky said “You may not score every time, but you’ll miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” If I can give any advice of my own to other artists or anyone feeling stuck- follow what’s in your heart and don’t be afraid to be yourself.👍 💓Sending you all lots of love! #artistlife #camilladerrico #beyondtherainbow #fridayvibes #surrealart #meltingrainbow #rainbow #print #artprint (at Anywhere And Everywhere!!!) https://www.instagram.com/camilladerrico/p/CYus19TP9Kg/?utm_medium=tumblr
