Okay, idk if this is a good question but it was the first idea in my head.

Are there any characters in either Reece or Steve's roster of roles that they've played over the years that you think are underrated?

I can think of some I think are overrated, but let me have a proper think...

I think the priest Reece plays in Venom is fucking hilarious. He's got like 2 lines but he makes the most of it 10/10

I love Steve's character in Mapp & Lucia (Georgie) and his character in Happy Valley (Kevin). Specifically because they're from the same year and they're wildly different characters. Excellent soup.

reece's character in auton except i couldn't get his glasses to look right so it's really just him from the 90's instead lol...

this art caused me SUCH a nightmare (stupid notes app screwed up) and it was lucky that i managed to take a screenshot so i at least had something i could scrape together lol

this was the only part of the drawing my app would save fsr ??? as much as it really annoyed me, have to admit it kinda looks cool...

some of the detail of my cross hatching that got sorta lost in the screenshot i used for the main piece which is a shame...

I was having a conversation with one of my irl friends the other day, talking about some random stuff.

Now, it should be worth noting that my irl friend’s special interests include the Pembersmith Universe (including The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, Inside No. 9, and anything to do with Reece Shearsmith & Steve Pemberton) and the Interwar period & WW2 in general.

anyways, the topic of Reece came up and we talked about our fave characters that Reece has played (their fave Reece characters are Tommy and Hector from the IN9 episodes “Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room” and “The Harrowing” respectively), and then a bit later my friend said this:

“oh ya’know what? I think Reece would make a real good Goebbels”

I was admittedly a bit surprised at first, so then I followed it up with smth like:

“oh…uhmm…what?”

and then they said:

“oh sorry, I should’ve clarified, what I *meant* was that I think Reece would be suited to play the role of Joseph Goebbels, in like a film or tv show or smth”

then I was like:

“ooh I see…interesting”

and they were like:

“Well, cuz ya’know, Reece is REALLY good at playing fictional evil cunts, so I think he would deffo fit the role of Goebbels, considering Goebbels was, ya’know, a real evil cunt, like Capital Letter *Evil Cunt*”

then I was like:

“oh yeah, true true”

then we are both quiet for a while, and then after it soon became clear to us both that the silence between us was a bit awkward, i broke the silence by saying:

“well, if Reece *was* hypothetically announced to play Goebbels in the future, then I’m hoping the Pembersmith fandom is, like, responsible about it, ya’know what I mean?”

and my friend was like:

“yeah, true. It’s important that the fandom doesn’t treat his portrayal of a real life evil war criminal like they treat his other fictional evil characters. The difference being that whilst his *fictional* evil characters are, well, fictional (ones who haven’t caused real life harm in the real world), Goebbels was an actual piece of shite who *did* cause real life harm and had contributed to one of the worst human atrocities in recent memory. Basically, people in the fandom shouldn’t, ig, “blorbify” his portrayal of an actual evil person in the same way as a fictional evil character played by Reece like, idk, Hugo from “Stage/Fright” or smth”

I told them I agreed with what they said, and then I added:

“also, if the fandom isn’t careful about it, then it could make the fandom a less safe place for any other fans who’s ancestors were directly affected by what the Nazis did.”

my friend was then like:

“True. There’s a difference between liking his performance of a real evil person vs actually, idk, “cutesy-fying” his portrayal of a real evil person by making “cutesy” fanart or GIFs or edits or fanfic of him or smth, if that makes sense?”

I told them that I understood what they meant.

We then became quiet again, and we both decided to move onto a somewhat lighter topic due to the heavy subject matter of what we’ve discussed, in which, whilst it was a bit heavy, it was an important topic to talk about.
