Arsenal’s player ratings for Arsenal vs Brighton FA Cup Semi-Final
Far from the best performance, especially in the first half where we were getting stifled by their low block à la the Villa game. Visibly some momentum dissipated from the international break, but when you have a squad brimming with talent and confidence, can you really have any doubt that a comfortable win is in the bag?
Starting XI: Manu — 7/10. as with most games, wasn’t really tested bar one good save and had a fairly comfortable outing. saw one or two moments of good distribution (shades of Ramsdale), would be amazing if she can work on pinging balls to the second line of attack instead of going with the ‘short pass to the CBs’ routine. Noelle — 8/10. was on her A game today. great forward runs down the wide areas and sent in exquisite crosses from the right side, she was robbed of at least 2 assists today tbh. not the least bit suspect in her defense too. Leah — 8/10. the definition of solid in the backline and nabbed a late goal to top it off. she’s making these powerful headers a habit, you know. i think it was after the first match of the season (vs Okzhetpes), Jonas said we didn’t score any goals from setpieces and needed to work on that... and the results so far have been a peach. Jen — 7/10. would say she’s the weaker of the two CBs and had some shaky moments, but did a fine job today after having been left out the past few games. has to be said that i feel more secure with Lotte though. it’s probably too late at this stage of her career but adding the passing qualities and ability to break lines like Leah does would improve her game greatly. Katie — 7.5/10. as usual, no-nonsense performance from her and did her thing getting up and down the flanks well. bonus 0.5pts for her swearing and shithousery picked up by the mics on the field. the only blemish of her night was probably succumbing to that nutmeg from Koivisto and very nearly allowing Brighton to get a goal back. Kim Little — 8/10. she delivers every game. fantastic opening goal from her and she is so so strong defensively as well. it’s actually calming to watch her play because she is so assured and experienced even when other areas of the pitch are being chaotic.
Lia — 7/10. didn’t really leave a huge impression on my mind today, but that probably also means that she didn’t put a foot wrong either. either way, always good to see her back after missing the last few games.
Jordan — 7.5/10. took a few good shots (albeit not testing the keeper too much) and played some decisive passes that were weighted with the utmost precision. probably not as dynamic/mobile as Kim or Mana in the no.10 role, and her tendency is to spray longer passes to the wide areas rather than work in tight areas that are more central. all class though.
Keets — 7.5/10. hmm, a bit divided on this one... because yes, she didn’t get her goal today (tbf the goal-line clearance from the Brighton defence was top notch, as was their overall defending in the first half) and it seemed like nothing in the second half was clicking for her, but you can’t say that she wasn’t putting in a shift or not working hard today. you could feel her desire to be effective, make things happen, and was probably the liveliest player on the pitch in the first half. also think games like this are least suited to her, where she has little room to run into given her pace is one of her biggest strengths. but there’s something about her spirit that makes you want to root for her, so i hope she does well in this team!
Cait — 7/10. similar case to Keets, today was really the day to step up in the absence of Viv but ultimately left everyone wanting a little more. especially wasteful with her finishing, to the point that she could’ve actually had a hattrick in the first half alone. not too surprising since she hasn’t had much game time so far this season (although she is coming off international duty where she played a fair amount of minutes). just hope this doesn’t affect her confidence in any way because she is a capable striker, and her hold-up play was outstanding again today, now onto the end product!
Beth — 9/10. played a vital part in all three goals today and simply put, was unplayable. is in the form of her life at the moment and her greatest asset is that she’s capable of being effective on both wings, just oozing confidence with every play she makes. naturally, was on the end of a few strong tackles today and tumbled about a bit, god forbid she get injured because she is Arsenal’s best player by a distance right now. Subs:
Mana — 7/10. likely saved as the wild card to throw on if the deadlock wasn’t broken after half-time. her versatility is useful too as she played in the left wing today instead of the no.10 where she usually operates. didn’t do a whole lot but kept the attacking momentum going and it’s undeniable that she’s a silky genius with the ball at her feet. although, not sure if it was instruction or just dropping off, but felt that her pressing today left a bit more to be desired. Frida — 7/10. pretty much the same as Mana, the scoreline was comfortable when they came on so there wasn’t much onus to actively put more pressure on Brighton. she’s becoming the definition of Ms. Consistency in this team, cause I don’t think she’s ever turned in a bad performance since she’s arrived.
Patsy and Simone — 6/10. lower ratings just because they weren’t really on for that long and mostly looked like they were enjoying a passing practice in the backline. hope Simone can play more regularly now that she’s back from injury and show us what she’s all about; interested because she’s specifically Jonas’ signing, unlike Keets and Mana who were already signed before he arrived. Teyah — N/A. yay to academy players getting a step out on the field after all the work they put into training with the first team and travelling along; every minute must mean so much to her and represent a dream for her fellow academy teammates. Bonus: Jonas Eidevall — 7.5/10. whatever he said to the team at half time got the job done, because i don’t think any tactical changes were made in particular but they managed to turn it up a gear. looked like he was getting colder and colder as the game went on but his passion didn’t seem to fade, good win boss! Referee — 4/10. a couple of head-scratching decisions such as Cait’s perfectly fair tackle and disregarding the late challenge on Beth in the penalty area (although her shot was sailing off by a mile already). Overall: felt in this game that there was a lack of intricate passing down the middle; kept seeing the same pattern of hoofing it long to the wide areas and sending a cross in hoping someone meets it in the middle. This was probably due to Jordan being in the no.10 instead of Kim/Mana, as stated above, just a difference in playing style but it helps to have more variation in our attack especially when there’s limited space and 11 Brighton players behind the ball.
As for the forward players, the contrasts in “form” or visible contributions (goals & assists) are more noticeable because of how utterly dominant Arsenal have been in almost every game (yeah except for Barca, we’re wiping that from the memory). Meaning that it’s given the defence less work to do and attackers much more avenue to shine, so it seems to be a comparison of who can be the most spectacular rather than the others actually being bad or lacking. Anyway, the season is long and the matches will be aplenty. Onward to Wembley!!!

Have to say it was a really nice touch for Brighton's announcer to announce that Arsenal were now Champions of the FAWSL, and to play We Are The Champions over the loudspeakers. Not sure every team would do that when they've just been beaten 4-0.
Brighton’s plans to build Europe’s first purpose-built women’s stadium is the ‘kind of progress we have dreamed about for years’, according
I'm glad this is finally going somewhere - I remember Polly Bancroft mentioning that they were working on it during a talk in the city pre-Euro 2022!
Just hope it doesn't siphon off fans from women's clubs nearby, especially as it'll be only 8km from Lewes, who are the only team in the world to have the same operating budget for both women's and men's sides, and 24km from Worthing, who are nice to me
