For your whole life you and Tom had shared a birthday party together, only 5 days apart it seemed pointless to have 2 parties with the same friends and family. It started when you both turned one, parents sitting around the table as you both blew out the candles on the shared cake and then you grabbed and handful and smushed it into Tom’s little face. Tom let out a giggle and threw some back at you making your parents laugh and take some photos, it being one of your proudest and most fond on the wall. It also became a little tradition when you blew out candles on the cake. As you got older you and Tom compromised for each other, having both princesses and knights, dinosaurs and unicorns, robots and fairies. You both wanted to make the other happy and your parents were more than happy to oblige, but as you got older you just wanted to go do something fun and take a few friends. Every year you and Tom got a photo together that would end up on both of your bedroom walls, to show your journey as you grew up.
This year you and Tom decided you wanted a house party with a Disney fancy dress theme and practically the whole school was invited. As you were both turning 18 you knew it was bound to be a big one, especially as Tom was getting more popular. It made you a little anxious, but you knew you had your family and friends by your side and your room to run to if things got too much. Plus, your parents were allowing you to drink a little alcohol this year under their supervision, so that would help a lot.
You were dressing up as Tinkerbell and Tom as Captain Hook, matching costumes just making sense since you were young. You had a set of fairy wings on your back that you borrowed from Arrow and your Mom had glued some white pom poms onto some green shoes for you. You had done Tom’s eyeliner for him, laughing when he winced as you did the waterline.
“Stop being a baby Tommy, it doesn’t hurt.”
“I don’t poke myself in the eye everyday Peach.” He retorted, poking you in the arm.
You shook your head and took the eyeliner away from him, ruffling his hair a little to give him more of a rough look and placing his hat on his head. You stepped back and gave him a nod of approval as he pretended to twirl to show off.
“Well Tinkerbell, shall we go to Neverland and see our guests?” He asked holding his arm out for you to take, making you laugh.
“Hold on I’ll sprinkle some fairy dust and we can fly there.”
“You can fly Peach.” He smirked and lifted you over his shoulder and ran down the stairs with you, finally dropping you off in the kitchen as you doubled over in laughter, him smiling at your pretty face.
“You two do realise you already have guests here right?” Your Dad chuckled, pointing to the people gathering outside around the firepit, some with drinks in their hands and some crowding around the beer pong table that was definitely only there for the adults. Your grandparents had come and taken the little ones earlier, so it was just your parents, aunts and uncles staying for the party and fun.
“Sorry Dad, just fixing Tom’s eyeliner while he cried like a little girl.” You teased, before rushing outside so Tom couldn’t attack you again.
“It really hurts okay?” He whined to the adults as they looked at him with amused faces and following behind you as they laughed at him.
You threw your hands around Josh’s neck as you reached him and kissed him softly, having grown a lot closer whilst dating over the past few weeks.
“Hello Pan.” You smirked and adjusted his cap on his head making him smile.
“Tinkerbell, you look exceptionally beautiful tonight, birthday girl.” He smiled at you making you blush.
“Y/N I got you a drink! Oh hey Josh.” Tom stared at him as he passed you your drink. He felt the pit of fire burning in his stomach and he resisted the urge to slap his smirk off his smug face.
“Hey Tom, Happy Birthday man.” Josh smiled at Tom, making Tom scowl a little.
“Thanks,” He mumbled, stumbling a little when Sasha came over with her arms wrapped around his neck.
“Hey Sasha.” You muttered, glaring at her softly. This bitch had come dressed as Tinkerbell too, the audacity. You rolled your eyes softly and looked up at Josh silently begging him to take you away.
“Oh, I didn’t know you would be here.” She scoffed, looking you up and down.
“It’s my party?” You laughed a little, looking at Tom with a confused look as he shook his head.
“You never said it was a joint party.” Sasha frowned at Tom.
“I thought it was implied.” He muttered as she started shouting at him.
You and Josh decided to slip away and enjoy your night without the wrath of the brunette. You met up with the rest of your little group and played a few drinking games before Tom came over to get you.
“Cake time. Don’t smush it in my face this year, please.” He sighed making you frown. He loved doing that each year, it was your tradition at this point. You gave him a questioning look and his eyes just flicked over to Sasha and you nodded in acknowledgement as you sat in front of your family and friends with the giant cake in the middle of you two. Blowing the candles out was never so dull, it wasn’t the same without smashing cake into Tom’s face.
The last thing you remember was blowing out your candles and wishing everything would figure itself out, before waking up on your bathroom floor, hair stuck to your face. Maybe drinking so much last night and playing beer pong with Tom wasn’t such a good idea after all.
You peeled yourself off the floor and hopped into the shower, washing off the vomit, sweat and grime from the party and letting the water wash over your hungover skin. You got out and jumped into some pyjamas and got back into bed, taking the medicine your parents had left on the side and gulping down some water. As soon as you turned on your TV you heard a tapping at your window, seeing Tom with a big smile on his face. You sighed but got up to let him in, immediately getting back into your cocoon.
“I have some news.” He smirked, jumping into bed with you and handing you the bag of your favourite meal from McDonalds making you grin in thanks. You slowly sat up and looked at his expectantly as you took a sip of your drink.
“I lost my virginity last night.” He grinned, making you spit out your drink in surprise and start coughing on it.
“What? Who with?” You asked confused, recovering from the moment and ignoring the crushing feeling in your chest at his admission.
“Sasha, who else?” He laughed at you while rubbing your back from the coughing.
“Well congrats I guess?” You said nervously.
“There’s one more thing.” He muttered, looking down at his hands. He was nervous about something. You could tell by the way he was playing with his fingers.
“Why did you bribe me with Maccies?” You asked him suspiciously, raising an eyebrow at him.
“I want to take Sasha to the dance.” He mumbled quickly.
“Oh.”
“I know it’s tradition and I love going with you but me and Sasha are getting serious and it’s senior year, I’m not going to get another chance.” He rushed out.
“Tom, it’s fine. Josh asked me too. Go with Sasha.” You smiled at him, trying to hide the pain behind your eyes. “Just save a dance for me.”
“Of course.”
As much as you felt sad about losing Tom as your long-standing date to the dance you were very glad you had Josh as his replacement. You and Tom still managed to get a picture together at home before you left, and before Sasha clung to his arm and you couldn’t get anywhere near him. He still drove you there, playing songs and singing stupidly the whole way making you remember how much you actually liked him.
Tom parked up outside the dance and gave you a winning smile, “Have fun tonight, if you need me…”
“Text you, yeah I know. See you later Tommy.” You laughed as Josh came up to the car and opened your door. You kissed Josh on the cheek and grabbed his hand, rushing towards the doors making Tom scowl.
“Dick.” He mumbled under his breath before getting out of the car himself and finding his girlfriend.
You managed to have one quick dance with Tom while Sasha scowled at you the whole time and Josh danced with Lily, Zach and Penny in the meantime, knowing how important your friendship with Tom was. But the peace didn’t last for long.
You quickly joined them, and Josh twirled you around, making your dress flow softly. He pulled you close to his chest as a slow song came on and wrapped his arms around your waist, one hand dipping to just above your bum. Holding you softly and lovingly in his arms as you hand wrapped around his neck. The eye contact between the both of you was full of passion, you leaned in slowly for a kiss, feeling his hand grip onto your ass into it. You laughed and deepend the kiss, loving the feeling of his lips on yours, until he was ripped away from you.
“Get your hands off her.” Tom screamed at Josh, pushing him away from you.
“Tom it’s fine. Stop.” You reasoned, putting your hand on his shoulder only to have him shove it off harshly.
“This is between me and him.”
“Tom I’m not going to fight you. Y/N is my girlfriend, we were kissing.”
“You touched her ass, you asshole.” He spoke gritting his teeth and throwing a punch to Josh’s jaw.
“Tom!” You shouted, going in between them both and pushing him backwards, inadvertently getting hit by his swinging hand in the process, right in the cheek. You gasped and took a step backwards looking at him in betrayal, a hand held up to your cheek. You felt Josh’s hand on your shoulder and your little group of friends gathering around you, making sure you were okay and giving Tom evils. You shrugged Josh’s hand off, mad at him for even entertaining Tom’s fight.
“How could you?” You asked him heartbroken, tears dripping freely down your face as you reached out for Josh’s hand.
“Y/N I’m sorry, it wasn’t meant for you.”
“No, it was meant for my boyfriend who you shouldn’t have been hitting in the first place. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“He was touching you.” Tom shouted back at you, getting angry that you were pissed off with him.
“He’s my boyfriend. Don’t you think I’d have pushed him off if I didn’t want him to?”
“You’re weak Y/N. I didn’t want him to take advantage of you.”
“I’m weak?” You laughed sadly, that stinging more than a punch ever could. “Fuck you Thomas Padalecki, don’t speak to me ever again.”
“Y/N come on, we’ve been friends for 18 years and you’re throwing it away over this douche?” He pleaded, tears coming to his eyes as he realised, he was losing the only thing that made getting up everyday worth it.
“You’re the douche. We’re done.” You mumbled and turned to Lily and Penny as they lead you away from the crowd that had formed. Josh looked after you sadly but walked in the opposite direction with Zach.
“Fine maybe we shouldn’t talk anymore.” He shouted after you angrily.
Tom was left to watch you walk away, a group of friends behind you and realised you really didn’t need him anymore. He had lost you. He had only just realised he loved you and he’d already fucked it up.

When you returned to school a week later you were very wary of spending too much time with Tom, aware that it makes his girlfriend jealous and that you’re still a bit unsure whether to trust him or not.
Instead, you spent more time with Penny and her friends, who had finally got out of detention. Her friend Zach was quite clearly a prankster and loved being a class clown; he had no problem making you laugh during your lunch breaks. Lily was calmer, but she was a good listener and gave great advice. And then there was Josh. You and Josh had hit it off straight away, feeling comfortable around one another and already giving hugs and small touches here and there. He always gave you little compliments every day to make you smile. You were completely upfront with them about your anxiety and they were all really supportive. You found you didn’t need Tom to be happy; you were your own person. It took you 17 years to get there, but you were finally gaining some independence and confidence in yourself. That group was a really good influence on you and Tom, and your family could see it.
When Penny invited you and Lily over for a sleepover you jumped at the opportunity, never really having any girlfriends to do that with. You turned up at her door, big bag full of treats in one hand and your pillow and sleeping bag in the other with a big smile on your face making her laugh.
“You excited Y/N?” She teased softly.
“I don’t really get to do these things, Tom’s a boy.” You laughed, and she nodded in understanding and led you upstairs.
“Well, the most important part of a sleepover is having fun!” She gleamed. Lily was already on the floor surrounded by a pillow fort.
“That looks comfy,” You laughed, putting your bags down.
“Go get your PJs on and come join us!” Penny shrieked.
After watching a couple of movies and eating more than your body weight in junk food you had all decided to make some TikToks.
“Let’s do the one with the beat where you have to call your crush!” Penny laughed, a glint in her eye.
“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” You mumbled nervously. You could not call Tom: it would be so embarrassing.
“Come on Y/N it will be fun! It probably won’t even land on you anyway.” Lily smiled at you reassuringly making you relax a little and give in.
As you pointed at each other you made sure to point as quick at you could to Lily so it wouldn’t land on you, face dropping when it did. You breathed out a curse word and pulled out your phone. You called the number and breathed out heavily feeling the anxiety fill your chest. Lily took your hand from beside you as she saw who you were calling. As it rang you felt yourself regretting this more and more.
“Hello?” A grumbly voice came from your phone almost making you jump.
“Hi, Josh,” You breathed out shakily.
“Y/N what’s up? You okay?” He asked gently, hearing the nerves in your voice.
“I just needed to tell you something.” You giggled softly as you realised what you were going to do.
“You can tell me, go on.” He said patiently.
“I um - uh - likeyou.” You rushed out hoping he had heard you as your cheeks flushed red.
“Bit slower love,” He laughed.
“I like you, Josh,” You mumbled embarrassed, looking into the camera that was still recording and regretting ever agreeing to do this.
“I like you too.” He spoke without hesitation making you breathe out.
You took the phone off loudspeaker immediately as they shut off the video, not quite believing what just happened.
“Josh it’s okay if you don’t. You don’t have to say it back, I’m a big girl.” You said, not really trusting your words.
“No Y/N I really do, I’ve wanted to ask you out since I set eyes on you, but I didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable,” You could hear his smile down the phone making you relax instantly.
“That’s sweet of you Joshy,” You giggled, making him laugh.
“So, do you want to go out on a date Y/N?” He asked softly, knowing it could scare you away.
“Of course!” You agreed.
“Great, tomorrow? 7pm?” He asked and you mumbled a yes and hung up.
Fuck, you hadn’t had a date in a year, was it still the same? What were you going to wear? What if he didn’t like you? What if you said something wrong?
Penny and Lily’s eyes snapped to you as they heard your breathing quicken, immediately rushing to your side and taking your hand.
“Y/N it’s okay.” You heard Penny whisper as she stroked circles on your back.
“I just haven’t been out with anyone in a while. I’m okay, I swear.” You mumbled giving them a half assed smile that seems to appease them a little.
“Y/N Josh would never hurt you. He’s been talking about asking you out since you met him.” Lily explained laughing slightly. You raised your eyebrows looking at her questioningly.
“You planned this didn’t you?” You giggled when they nodded their heads looking very proud of themselves. You shook your head at them and relaxed, you were going to enjoy yourself for once.
You didn’t think about the date until the next day, when Tom was sat on your bed trying to make plans with you for that night.
“C’mon Y/N the girls had you last night, I don’t get a movie night with my best friend?” Tom pouted slightly making you laugh.
“I can’t, I um have a date,” You rushed out casually. “So, you want some lunch?” You coughed hoping he hadn’t heard you.
“Hey, you don’t get out of that that easily,” He laughed, looking at you with his head tilted. “Who with?”
“Josh.” You mumbled softly, not even being able to look him in the eye. It felt like cheating, but it wasn’t. You were just friends. You shook your head and focused on Josh.
“That guy?” Tom asked jumping up. “No, nu-uh. Not happening,” He mumbled stepping in front of your closet.
“Tom calm down, he’s sweet. Why can’t I date him?” You folded your arms and looked at him pointedly.
“He’s not good enough for you, and he’s always in detention. You need someone who’s a good influence.” He shrugged, ignoring the fire burning in the pit of his belly. It was a common occurrence whenever you went on a date, but he had always ignored it.
You raised your eyebrow at him and shoved him out of the way, laughing as he fell onto your beanbag chair. You stepped into your closet and took out a few dresses as options for Tom to help you choose from as he sulked on your bed.
“You can’t choose who I date Tom, your girlfriend hates me.” You shrugged laughing as he tried to protest but realised, he had no argument.
“Fine, but you tell me all about it tomorrow, and if you’re in trouble you ring me, and I’ll be there.” He wagged his finger at you, making you laugh and push it away.
“Stop being such a Dad Tom. Now, blue or purple?” You asked him, holding the dresses up to your chest making him shake his head, God you were so adorable in his mind.
You literally had to force Tom back over to his house through his window as Josh pulled up outside. He wanted to go scare the guy a little, but you wouldn’t let him. As soon as he got back through his window he sat down against the wall and pulled his legs into his chest. What was that? Sure, he always felt overprotective and a little jealous before you went on dates, but he hasn’t felt that jealous since… since you went on your first date.
****
At the ripe age of 12 being asked out on your very first date was nerve wracking, and even more so when you knew you were probably going to get your first kiss. You didn’t know if you were ready for that. So as always you turned to Tom to freak out.
“Y/N calm down, kissing can’t be that hard. Why did you agree to go out with this guy anyway?”
“Because he’s the only one who’s asked.” You mumbled, not meeting Tom’s eyes.
“Peach that should never be the reason you go out with someone, you hear me.” He spoke, lifting your chin so you looked into his eyes. You were close, noses almost touching and both gazing intensely into each other’s eyes. It was almost romantic, until you pulled away harshly at your phone pinging.
“Sorry, it’s him.” You mumbled softly, typing a quick answer to the text and ignoring your heart beating against your chest.
“Look Peach, if you want, we can do a practice kiss, that way you won’t be nervous. I’ve never done it before either so you can’t mess up with me.” Tom shifted in his place, looking at you shyly. His heart was hammering in his chest and he was hoping with every part of him you would say yes and forget about that stupid guy.
“As long as it doesn’t mess up our friendship,” You mumbled, inching closer to him.
“Nothing ever could.” He whispered, pressing his lips to yours. You both felt the same that day, butterflies in the bottom of your stomachs like a pit of fire, sparks between your touch and inching to kiss more and more but you couldn’t. You were best friends, nothing more.
“Thanks Tom, I feel a lot better.” You smiled at him, not noticing the way his face falls softly as your phone pings again. “He’s here, I’ll see you after Tommy.”
As you rushed out the door and he climbed back through his window his heart fell to his stomach, he couldn’t fall in love with his best friend. He promised himself that day he never would.
****
He shook it off, he was with Sasha. He couldn’t go back down that road, not when there was never a chance of you liking him back. So, he pushed the feelings back down and texted his girlfriend. You were always just going to be friends, best friends.
Josh had treat you like a princess all night, he had set up a picnic on a nearby mountain top in the back of his pickup. He had lots of blankets and an iPad to play some movies on while you cuddled up. It was perfect, and he almost took your mind off Tom.
“Josh, this has been great. Thank you, you didn’t have to go through all this trouble.” You smiled at him, eyes sparkling in sincerity.
“I wanted to. I really like you Y/N. I have something to ask you.” He grinned as he sat up in his truck.
“Yes?”
“Will you go to the dance with me?” He asked hopefully, you hated to crush his sparkling face and ruin this moment.
“I can’t Josh, I’m sorry. I go with Tom every year. It’s a tradition, you know.” You shrugged sadly, squeezing his hand in apology.
“I get it, I wish it could be different, but I understand. At least save a dance for me?” He asked sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck.
“Of course, can’t miss up that opportunity.” You smiled and leaned in to give him a quick peck. Although you felt the butterflies at the bottom of your stomach and you really loved kissing him, your mind couldn’t help but to circle back to Tom. It was never the same feeling as Tom, but all you could ever be was best friends. So, you settled for the rougher, less tingly lips of Josh and smiled sadly. You would always have to settle.

Jared watched as his eldest son sauntered into the kitchen for his breakfast the morning after Jensen had rung him angrily to tell him about Tom’s behaviour. He spoke to his wife and agreed to broach it with him after school when they had more time because they were pissed beyond belief with him. Y/N was like their niece and she meant the world to them.
“Morning bud,” Gen smiled at Tom, pushing a plate of pancakes towards him.
“Tom, Jensen called Y/N’s not going in today, she’s sick.” Jared searched the boy for any glint if guilt but couldn’t find any.
“I’m sure she’ll be fine, I’ll text her later.” He shrugged tucking into his pancakes. Jared looked to his wife and sighed, their thoughtful son had disappeared overnight.
You woke up with a banging headache, thankful your parents had left you to sleep in and not get up for school after you had to visit them in the night for some pain medication. You groaned and pulled your covers around your aching bones as you shivered.
“Y/N you up hun?” You heard your Mom whisper as she popped her head in your room.
“Yes.” You croaked out the sound of your voice surprising you, you’re surroundings confusing you.
“Oh, dear. You’re burning up.” Danneel smiled sadly and pushed your hair out of your eyes. “I’ve brought you some medicine, a drink and some breakfast.”
“I’m not hungry.” You mumbled, looking at her blurry figure.
“Just try your best sweetie. Get some rest.”
“Can’t rest when I’ve got to save the world.” You muttered, eyes rolling to the ceiling.
“Y/N do you know where you are?” She asked you worriedly, taking in your pale appearance, sweat dripping down your face yet you cuddled up in bed, shaking.
“In the bunker, tell Dean I’ll be ready in 10.” You mumbled sleepily, making an effort to get out of bed but swaying softly.
“Woah, you need to sit back down. Y/N you’re at home with me.” Your Mom looked at you worriedly and shouted her husband up the stairs.
“Need to go.” You mumbled, standing up and falling towards the blurry figure.
“Jeez, Y/N.” Your Mom sighed softly and laid you back down on your bed.
“What’s wrong?” Jensen asked concerned.
“Ring 911,” Danneel muttered, sending Jensen into a panic. She turned her attention back to you and stroked your hair like she always did when you were sick.
**********
Danneel looked at her 3-year-old and could see something just wasn’t right. Jensen was away filming and she was alone and didn’t trust herself. Her daughter was burning up that’s for sure but she didn’t know what to do.
“Gen I need your help.” Danneel rushed out as she rang the first person she could think of.
“Woah, slow down Dee. What’s wrong?” She asked calmly.
“It’s Y/N. She’s burning up and lethargic and something just isn’t right.” She rushed out looking down at her poorly daughter in her lap.
“I’ll be over in 2,” Gen said and hung up, moments later flying through the door with Tom in tow and Shep in her arms.
“Is Y/N okay?” The toddler asked sadly, seeing his best friend limp on his aunties lap.
“She’s a little sick at the moment Tommy, can you go make her a drawing in the kitchen?” Gen smiled at him setting him up with crayons, setting Shep down in a bassinet on the floor, next to JJ, and then turned her attention back to the panicking Danneel.
“What is it, Gen?” She asked as Gen’s face paled.
“Do you have a glass?”
“What the hell do you need a glass for?” Danneel asked confused. Gen ran to the kitchen and ran back, rolling the glass across Y/N’s chest and back.
“Danneel I’m going to ring 911 and call Jensen to come home. I think it’s meningitis. She’ll be fine but she needs help.”
That was the first time your Mom had seen you so helpless and small since you were born. Seeing you with wires sticking out with you was scary as hell and her nerves didn’t settle until your eyes opened and locked onto hers. A smile etched on your face as the medicine kicked in and seeing your Daddy for the first time in months. She never wanted to see you that sick again.
********
As soon as she’d rang Gen when Y/N got to the hospital and was in a bed surrounded by wires, Gen pulled Tom out of school. She explained to Tom what was happening and Tom rushed over to the hospital driving faster than he ever had in his life. He swore to himself the whole way there, it was his fault. If he had given her a lift yesterday she wouldn’t have had to walk home in the rain. Seeing her dripping wet on the sidewalk it took everything in him not to pull over and get her to hop in but Sasha was jealous of Y/N and he had to make a good impression.
He rushed to his parents and her parents in the waiting room to be met by scowling faces.
“Look I know I fucked up. I feel awful and I blame myself. But the only thing that matters right now is that she’s okay.” He rushed out, tugging at his hair.
“She’s fine. She’s got pneumonia and is pretty dehydrated. She’s gonna be here for a couple of days at least.” Jensen said gritting his teeth.
“Look, Tom, she looks pretty bad right now. She’s on oxygen, IVs are sticking out and monitoring wires, she may not want to see you.” Danneel smiled sadly at the boy, anger disappearing seeing his worried face.
“I don’t care, she’ll be terrified. She needs me, I need her.” He spoke making her parents nod and gesture to her room.
He walked in apprehensively knowing you would hate him for what he did.
“What the fuck do you want Padalecki?” You asked through the oxygen mask, one eye open and staring at him. Well more glaring.
“Look I’m sorry. Sasha was jealous and I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable. I didn’t mean to get you sick.” He spat out, moving closer to the girl.
“And you didn’t think to talk to me about it?” She asked him angrily.
“She was always there, I didn’t get the chance. As soon as I heard you knock I knew I had fucked up, but I felt so guilty about it all. I needed to think. I’m sorry I should’ve come to you. Did you have a panic attack?”
“No, luckily. Just wanted to rip your head off.”
“I don’t blame you.” He whispered moving closer and grabbing your hand making you raise your eyebrow. “Look I promise I’ll always come to you first. I fucked up and it won’t happen again. You’re sick because of me so now I have to wait on you hand and foot until your better.” He joked making you giggle slightly.
“Tom it was the biggest punch in the gut.” You mumbled.
“I know and I’m so sorry. I will never ignore you again. I cross my heart and hope to die.” He mumbled kissing your forehead.
“Fine, I forgive you.” You laughed at his fist pump, “Ifff you are still taking me to the school dance.”
“Of course who else would want to take you?” He quipped back making her laugh. It was their favourite tradition and it was never broken.
“Tom? Do you love me?” You asked softly looking at his hand on top of yours.
“Of course, why do you ask?” He asked concerned, not noticing the slight blush on the girls face.
“Sing to me.” You smiled hazily at him, melting when he gave you a smile back.
As you listened to his soft voice singing your favourite song you drifted off to your favourite dreamland. Just you and Tom, and no Sasha to fuck everything up. You were falling, hard.
A/N: Sorry this took so long, for a while there this story became my own life and I had my heart broken. It was hard to relive it all, but I’m finally over it, I hope you enjoy my pain.

The next time you even got a whiff of a party buzz going around the school you encouraged Tom to go, not wanting him to miss out on his teenage years. You, however, were never going to have normal teenage years because anxiety plagued your bones. You helped him get ready and left him to his own devices on the promise he gave you the low down the next day. It took everything in you not to check up on him and text him that night. It was his night of fun. You couldn’t burden him like you always did. Instead you had a family movie night and an early night, spending some much needed time with your siblings.
The next morning it barely hit 9am when Tom burst through your bedroom door and jumped on your bed to wake you up, laying in the space beside you.
“Do you have a death wish Padalecki?” You hissed at him eyes still tightly shut.
“Come on Y/N it’s 9am, don’t you want to hear about my steamy kiss with Sasha?” He laughed making you shoot up. “That got your attention.” He smirked.
“You kissed her?” You asked, ignoring the sickly feeling in the pit of your stomach.
“Yup, and it gave me butterflies. Swarms of them Y/N!” He gushed making you feel guilty for being jealous while he was so happy.
“That’s brilliant Tom!” You forced out, smiling tightly.
“We’re going on a date this afternoon, soo I need you to help me pick out an outfit? Pretty please with cherries on top.” He begged making you giggle.
“Fine, only if it will be worth my time afterwards.” You laughed at his puppy face.
“Pizza and Disney marathon tomorrow?” He asked and you nodded.
Hearing about Sasha made your heart clench and every day you realised how stupid you were for falling for your best friend. He was heart-wrenchingly happy, it was a completely bittersweet feeling towards your best friend. If that wasn’t bad enough when he finally asked her out, you felt sick to your stomach. Then he started to drive her to school and she had to sit in the front, or she’d throw a bitch fit and toss you a dirty look. Then she sat with you two at lunch constantly giving you disgusted looks as you joked with Tom. You started seeing Tom less and less because he was always with her.
“It worries me Tom, I get that she’s your girlfriend but what if I have a panic attack and I need you and you’re not there? What if you’re with her?” You asked him one night, tearing up a little at the thought.
“Y/N listen to me. You’re my best friend, nothing will ever change that. You come first. Always.” He spoke, grabbing the sides of your head and looking into your eyes. Didn't really help with the whole crush thing either.
But little by little the strong bond between you two began to break. He wasn’t always there for you when you needed a little reassurance or pick me up. You turned to your family instead, but it would never be the same as your best friend. Your parents began tossing you worried looks whenever you came to them with the problem knowing they were never your first port of call, ever since you could talk it was Tom. It was always Tom.
You hit a breaking point when you sat down at your usual lunch table and he wasn’t there. You looked around nervously, you didn’t have any other friends and you couldn’t eat in front of all these people alone. Then you spotted him. Sat at the table with the jocks and his cheerleader girlfriend laughing not even looking over at your sad face. You quickly texted him asking if he was going to join you, to see him take his phone out look at the text and put it back in his pocket as if it was nothing. That was the stinger. You almost ran out of the cafeteria and into the library a quiet space you could collect your thoughts and focus on not crying.
“Psst.” You heard someone whisper making you look up around you, eyes locking on a brunette girl passing you a note. You recognised her as Penny from your French class and gave her a smile.
You okay? You look kinda lonely and upset.
Just friend issues, thank you for asking. You wrote on the slip of paper and passed it back.
Wanna get out of here? You looked up at her and nodded softly.
She led you to a picnic bench outside and got out her lunch and some notes from one of her classes and smiled at you.
“Look, I know what it’s like to feel lonely. I don’t have many friends around here and the ones I do have are in lunchtime detention.” She rolled her eyes making you giggle. “But you don’t have to be, you’re always welcome to hang out with me.”
“Thanks Penny, it means a lot.” You smiled at her gratefully and got out your lunch taking little nibbles, feeling weirdly comfortable around her already.
“Anytime.” She smiled. You spent the rest of lunch getting to know Penny and hearing stories about her troublesome friends making you laugh harder than you have in a while.
Although he had hurt you, you were looking forwards to seeing Tom at the end of the day so you could confront him about lunch. However, standing outside the front of school for the past 20 minutes wasn’t looking good. You texted him only to be left on read, making you sigh in frustration. He would feel your wrath when you got a hold of him. You looked at the time and sighed knowing your parents would still be working at the brewery so ringing them for a lift wasn’t an option and all of the buses had left 10 minutes earlier. You had no other option but to walk and it looked like the skies were about to open. Lucky you.
You finally arrived home half an hour later soaked to the bone and sniffling slightly. You slammed the door and dripped water all over the floor making your parents look up at you from where they had just sat down.
“Why are you dripping? You need to get out of those clothes before you get sick.” Your Mom asked sounding worried, rushing to get you a towel.
“Didn’t Tom give you a lift?” Your Dad asked confused.
“He didn’t show so I texted him and got left on read.” You grumbled.
“That’s not like Tom, maybe he wrote the message and forgot to press send. Something must have come up.” Your Mom said thoughtfully.
“He did the same at lunch to.” You mumbled.
“He left you at lunch? He knows how anxious you get eating around people!” Your Dad grumbled angrily. “Did you eat?” He asked you a little softer, looking in your miserable eyes.
“Yeah I sat with a girl from my French class called Penny. She looked after me, don’t worry.” You flashed a fake smile at them that clearly didn’t meet your eyes.
“That’s not the point, Tom shouldn’t have left you.” Your Mom pointed out.
“I’m not his child, he doesn’t have to do anything. Plus, his girlfriend is his first priority.” You sighed making your parents raise their eyebrows. “Now I’m gonna go shower I am freezing.” You mumbled making your way up the stairs and missing the way your parents stared after you sadly.
After your shower you began to feel more and more angry with Tom. You felt like you deserved an explanation, he had left you twice today and potentially going to make you sick. You saw his shadow behind his curtains on his bed watching TV so you knocked on the wall and waited for him to come over. After 5 minutes and still no sign of him you knocked again and furrowed your brows, usually he came over in a flash. Especially when you knocked, it was your secret code. You heard your phone ping and as you looked at the message you felt your heart break a little inside.

“Y/N, Sweetie. It’s time to get up for school.” You heard your Mom speaking softly as she shook you.
You opened your eyes and smiled lazily at her, making her smile brightly at you. You were so lucky you had people around you that cared so much. She kissed you on your forehead and left you to get ready for school. You put some leggings and a cropped hoodie and tied your hair up in a messy bun. It was just one of them days where you couldn’t be bothered to make an effort. You quickly took your medication before slamming your bedroom door.
You trudged downstairs and into the kitchen where your family were all eating breakfast. JJ was eating and doing last minute homework at the same time, your Dad looking at her shaking his head. She always did this, it wasn’t like it was something new in your household.
You sat down and grabbed a bagel, spreading some Nutella over it smiling at the twins.
“Morning sweetheart sleep well?” Your Dad asked, getting up to make some more coffee and kissing your hair on his way past.
“Yeah, still a bit tired but I’ve just gotta get used to these early mornings again,” You laughed, taking a sip of the orange juice you had poured yourself.
“You’ll get there, senior year kiddo. Not long until you can sleep in,” Your Mom laughed sitting with you all to eat breakfast.
“Good Morning Ackles household, how we all doing this morning?” You heard Tom shout soon after the door slammed. He came over to the table, taking a seat next to Zep and stealing a piece of toast.
“Your Dad not feed you, Thomas?” Jensen asked him, raising his eyebrows.
“When Mom’s away Dad cooks bacon and sausages and I don’t fancy getting food poisoning today,” He shrugged making your family laugh.
“Poor Shep and Odette,” You mumbled making his eyes light up as he laughed.
“He has to take them to school poor Dad,” He laughed. “We need to get going sleepy head,” He smiled at you, grabbing your backpack from the back off his chair.
“Okay. Bye Mom, bye Dad.” You mumbled as you quickly gave them hugs goodbye.
You followed Tom out the door as he literally skipped to his car. You giggled, completely not understanding how he can be this excitable this early in the morning. You watched him practically jump into his car and you fell into the seat next to him, complete opposites but match perfectly.
“How are you so happy?” You mumbled as you leaned back into the seat and closed your eyes, resting them until you got to school.
“It’s a sunny day, I didn’t get food poisoning and I get to see my best friend all day,” He smiled before he started singing along to the music.
“You see me all day every day,” You raised your eyebrows and opened your eyes slightly looking up at him.
“True, but you make school more fun,” He shrugged before going back to singing.
His voice was always like a lullaby to you. Soft and soothing but powerful, he never failed to calm you down. You felt yourself drifting but before you could fully relax into sleep, Tom announced you had arrived.
“That drive is never long enough,” You moaned as you got out of his car.
“Just be glad you’re not driving, we’d crash,” He teased, chuckling at your tired face.
“Oh, ha ha,” You spoke sarcastically.
He walked over to the tables set up with the schedules and grabbed both yours and his, allowing you to stand back from the crowd and relax. He handed you yours and you compared classes, seeing you had about half with each other. You frowned disappointed, but a few were better than none. Sophomore year was the worst, you had no classes together and you were on edge all year.
“What you got first?” He asked you, looking at his own schedule.
“Physics with Mr Williams, you?” You all but groaned. Physics first thing on a Monday morning all year was going to kill you.
“Same, which means you definitely won’t make me late, so you don’t need to worry your pretty little head,” He smiled, grabbing your arm and walking you to class.
You sat near the middle of the room, but close to the door for easy access. You got out all your supplies, ready for class to begin. You liked to be prepared, it calmed you a little. Tom being by your side made it all the better. You dropped your head tired, Tom catching it with his hands.
“You need some more sleep,” He chuckled.
“Tell me about it,” You sighed, interrupted by a girl talking to Tom.
“Hey Tom, how was your summer?” A girl you didn’t recognise came up to him and asked, flipping her long brunette hair.
“Hi Sasha, it was good. I got to spend it with my best friend here, how about yours?” He asked politely.
“Good, missed you at the beach party last night. I was hoping you’d come,” She smiled at him flirtatiously.
Your head snapped up at this. Beach party? What beach party? That meant he’d cancelled for you, again.
“I was busy, maybe next time?” He spoke sheepishly, not daring to look at your confused face.
“Definitely, maybe we can sit together at lunch?” She asked, tucking her hair behind her ear.
“I’d like that,” He smiled back at her, watching her walk away before he turned back to you.
You felt fire bubbling in your stomach. Were you jealous? He’s your best friend, nothing more, why were you jealous? You tried to hide the hurt look on your face as he turned back to you.
“Beach party?” You raised your eyebrows and looked at him expectedly.
“You needed me,” He explained, looking into your eyes and making your heart skip a beat.
“Tom, you need a social life. My Mom and Dad can be there for me,” You explained, though part of you wanted to keep him all to yourself.
“Okay, next time I’ll go. Might score a date with Sasha,” He chuckled, turning back to face the front as the teacher walked in.
You looked at his defined features on his face longingly. Why were you suddenly very attracted to him? He’s been like a brother to you your whole life and now your jealous of some girl he hasn’t even been on a date with yet? It doesn’t add up. You turned to face the teacher and tried to listen to the insanely boring physics lecture, but all that was on your mind was Tom and Sasha.
You looked to your shaking hands and started playing with your fingers, nervous. What had you got yourself into?
