Walking the Path

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

Philippians 3:8

That which offers the greatest reward often holds the most difficult road to walk. Wider than the path is the expanse of things abandoned--the precious things sacrificed in order to take another small step.

Must I let go of this much to keep walking?

Is it disheartening? Those sacrifices--and to wonder, was this dream here set down gently in tears, was it thrown aside in passion, or did it fall off as an apple does, naturally? Each seems to tell a story of sacrifice but also growth. Nevertheless, the discarded may give you second thoughts. You can keep all these things back there, the way you came…

To seek life or live in death is a choice we make every single day. If we have started on the path to know God in the most sincere and the most intimate of ways, then the small steps today lead to our future.

But everyone you meet on the road--those you pass and the defeated coming from the other direction--say it's not easy. That's nothing new, at least. But when it does get hard—harder still—how can we take that next step? And where do we find such greatness that transforms our precious things to rubbish? Do you want to arrive hands full--too full? Gripping what you refused to lay down. A stronger resolve to keep than ever before. 'I carried them all this way. They're mine.' Do you want to come to the destination with hands prepared to receive? Those people can look back at what they left. "You know," they say to each other, "maybe they weren't really so big after all."

Let's seek God a little more. Let's find our rod to lean on as we learn to walk, and let's persevere together.

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
