“These plants are meat-eaters?”
“They digest insects that drown in their pitchers, yes. Is that a problem?”
“I don’t know, do they eat anything bigger than insects?”
“Nothing our size without a lot of help, if that’s what you mean.”
“I don’t know whether to be disappointed or relieved.”
“The normal-person response is relieved, especially because we’re going to harvest some nectar and improve my mosquito repellent with it, which would be much more difficult with plants actively trying to kill us. If you want to smash something, there are insects literally everywhere.”

Sphagnum moss
Tamarack trees
Birdsongs
Pitcher plants

Captain Scott and Big Bob can also be seen clearing a handkerchief on Page 97 of this issue of The Times. Photo: The New York Times

We first visited last year in May and not a lot was blooming yet. Now that it’s June we got a chance to see a lot more hiding in the moss. The album is over on Smugmug, so check it out!
