Lassie and friend at the 1967 Golden Globe Awards.
The original Lassie was a rough collie named Pal (1940-1958, 18 years!). I've read a few conflicting stories about this but from what I can tell it is Pal that appears with John Wayne as Sam in the 1953 movie Hondo. Two dogs related to Pal are then believed to have played 'Dog' in the 1971 Wayne movie Big Jake. In that movie Dog originally appears to have a dark brown or black coat but it must have been dyed and it changes colour throughout the film (especially in one scene after he comes out of a river).
