Thank you Tubi for making me fall in love with Westerns and John Wayne, again.
John Wayne was the second biggest male star of the 50s and the number one box office star of the 60s. He had seven films among the top 100 blockbusters of the decade, more than any other star. Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are in second place with five films each.
He is seen here in those films - The Alamo (1961-5th biggest hit of the year, and the first film he directed), Hatari (1962-8), his third blockbuster with Howard Hawks, in Africa with Red Buttons and a giraffe), In The Longest Day (1963-3), he was part of a large all star cast, with John Ford on the set of one of the parts of How the West Was Won (1963-#1), popular for its gimmick of Cinerama. with Maureen O’Hara in a publicity still for McLintock (1963-10). They made five films together including two with John Ford. The Green Berets (1968-10), the second film he directed. Three images from True Grit (1969-6), his Oscar winner, and as Thomas Dunson in Red River (1948-3).
His Oscar win is an acknowledgement of his box office dominance over the previous twenty years, and even longer, back to his first blockbuster, with Howard Hawks, Red River (1948-3). He would continue to have blockbusters into the 70s.
