Leigh Brackett (7 December 1915 – 18 March 1978)
The "Queen of the Space Opera" was one of the most prominent women writers in science fiction in the 1940s and 1950s, Brackett's first novel, No Good from a Corpse (1944) was a hard-boiled mystery, which led to her work on the screenplay for The Big Sleep (1946) with director Howard Hawks. She would work with Hawks on Rio Bravo (1959), Hatari! (1962), El Dorado (1966), and Rio Lobo (1970). She adapted Chandler's 1953 The Long Goodbye for Robert Altman's 1973 film, and co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back (1980) with Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas.
