I can't tell you the exact years of how long this bottle of Avery's Uncle Jacob BBA Stout was lost in a dark corner of the beer cellar but I can assure you it was at least a few. At almost 16% abv, it's still a dang woodsy/roasty/sweet and rich chocolate and coffee sip of malty motor oil. This ain't no fooling around.

After Arizona, Alaska

Four Peaks Brewing opened in 1996, but you’ll be forgiven for not hearing about it. Four Peaks doesn’t travel far out of Arizona, yet. But the new owners are sending out Hop Knot IPA and Double Knot DIPA further afield, testing the waters. 

Both beers are brewed with the same five hops -- Cascade, Glacier, Liberty, Magnum, and Simcoe -- but one is obviously stronger than the other. They taste almost identical. Lots of pine trees, a little resin, a squeeze of citrus. I mean, one is obviously stronger than the other, with more caramel malt and a chewier body, but otherwise, they are the same beer. Did I mention one is stronger?

So what is Anheuser-Busch doing buying up a middling brewery in Arizona? It’s part of a fifty state strategy. If what the people want is locally made beer, by god, ABI will give it to them. Using their superior distribution network and marketing prowess, ABI is pushing their new brands into every Safeway, 7-11, and Chili’s. And it’s working. The High End, ABI’s portfolio of recent acquisitions, grew by thirty percent last year while some big regional breweries were shrinking.

So is that bad news for good beer diversity? It’s certainly not great. Jeff at Beervana has some good reasons not to freak out quite yet, but I might need to start that Goose Island boycott.

#Repost @homebrewedhero_dmv I was fortunate to be able to swing by @silverbranchus’ Big Beer Fest with some friends yesterday! 🎉 I’m a huge fan of their Abbey-style beers, especially their Abbey Quadruple, “Silver Century”. I’ve been cellaring cans of this annual release since 2019. Each year’s release is unique in appearance, aroma, and flavor, and I’ve enjoyed them all! ☺️ Silver Century is my favorite Abbey Quadruple made in the DMV region (and I’m constantly hunting around for them). 😋🍻 . The newest release is very unique. On draft it’s aroma is dominated by Belgian spice, with a bit of ripe fruit, caramel, and booziness. The flavor is also dominated by Belgian spice (compared to previous releases), which I like a lot. I got notes of raisin, dates, a bit of banana, and maybe a bit of pink bubblegum (a flavor I’ve noted in some Silver Branch saisons). It’s also has balanced caramel sweetness, bitterness, and booziness. Overall it’s the most unique Abbey Quadruple I’ve had. I’m curious to see how these flavors evolve with age! 👏 . In comparison, the 2019 Silver Century is the most traditional in aroma and flavor, much like a Rochefort 8 or 10. (Relatively) Less spice character and more ripe fruit aromas and flavors, with a burnt molasses bitterness. ❤️ . The 2020 Silver Century has a bit of an American twist to it IMO. It has less prominent raisin (dark fruit), a more hoppy bitterness, and is a bit more boozy. 👍 . Have you tried Silver Century yet? What’s the best Abbey Quadruple you know of made in the US?
