Strawberries Are My Drug of Choice

Fifties went flying as I reached for my IDs.

"Did you get them all?" she asked.

"Yes," I replied. 

"Are you sure??..." 

She was jumpy, and I couldn't blame her. It was her first trip to the dispensary and our last stop of the day. Anxiety deprived me of the will to drive myself the 15 miles up the highway, so I bribed my mom with lunch and a visit to our dead relatives if she would take the detour. When I climbed back in the car 45 minutes later, I produced a small black envelope with a strawberry stamp from the crinkly paper lunch bag. "This is what $60 gets you here. One. Just one," I said, holding it up so Mom could get a good look. "You could get EIGHT of these for $200 if you knew a guy." Her sideways glare burned into my cheeks and my soul... 

I persisted by explaining that, after trying numerous strains across the country, I discovered that strawberry cannabis provides me the greatest relief from anxiety, depression, migraine pain. And it makes sense. As a child, I would snatch giant handfuls of flaming crimson berries fresh from the garden. They were my first choice, my favorite fruit, my signature fragrance, and my comfort food. I gobbled up strawberry shortcake desserts. I rocked Strawberry Shortcake dolls to sleep. I inhaled strawberry ice cream and strawberry toaster strudels. I bathed myself in strawberry lip gloss and strawberry body lotion. I currently have a 25-ounce bottle of strawberry body wash in my shower. 

Like all other plants, including cannabis, strawberries are rich in terpenes, organic compounds that give plants their aroma and taste. Terpenes, such as linalool, also have calming properties and can be found in plants we use every day, like fruits, pepper, and lavender. The terpenes abundantly found in wild and garden strawberries include the same major terpene found in eucalyptus and a natural anti-fungal agent and sleep aid called nerolidol. Strawberries also contain limonene, myrcene, and beta-caryophyllene [beta-C], all of which improve mood, relieve anxiety, and provide relaxation to encourage sleep, and pinene, which promotes alertness. 

I've suffered from insomnia and nightmares for 37 years that I can remember, and I believe I developed study habits to accommodate a slight touch of undiagnosed ADHD. I never knew I suffered from anxiety and depression. I found out I was different in high school when I overheard my peers debating who was more depressing: me or Alice In Chains.

Since people have been using cannabis for thousands of years without any reported overdose deaths, Big Farma medicine became a clear choice for me. Side effects include increased creativity, productivity, focus, feelings of well-being, and hope. That seems more reasonable than a list of side effects so long you realize Big Pharma might cure your foot fungus, but it might also kill you. 

Numerous studies including research by the National Institute on Drug Abuse suggest that your first mood-enhancing drug of choice in adolescence tends to be the substance you choose in adulthood. I'm so grateful strawberries were my drug of choice.
